I have f NIS 2013 1 user/ 3 licences installed on my computers. Some sellers on Amazon offer boxed NIS 2011 and NIS 2012 for less money than a boxed NIS 2014 would cost. Can I save some money and just buy the older versions of NIS and use the key that comes with them to renew my subscription?
It is my understanding that you are buying a license to use the current version of NIS, no matter what the date on the box says.

Hi,
Know your vendor. There have been reports of people selling / reselling subscription keys that have been activated and are now worthless. I'm not sure how far back you can go to get a key and have it work on the current version. We'll have to wait until one of the experts stops in and provides the answer.
Stay tuned
Hello
Keys from new and unused boxes from 2011 and 2012 should still be good for NIS 2014 or for version 21 as it is now known as.Amazon should be ok as I haven't seen any complaints about them. To get an official report though you can try the free chat if you are currently a User of Norton products although Norton does read the threads.
Wise words have been offered to you, be carefull that you are not getting a old used key. IF it's direct from Amazon, then you should be fine, but if it's from a third party seller, be careful, and make sure they are a reputable dealer. (read the feedback)
I have bought and used older NIS licence before, but only one year previous licence.
Hi, jerryscan. As long as the keys are legitimate, as the others have said, you can use them.
Then you can update to the latest version, if you so wish.
I bought a 1 user 3 pc disc last year of the 2012 version, and am now running the latest available version of NIS.
Also 2012 was the last version, using the local vault. However if you overinstall when you upgrade, you will retain the local vault.
Thanks for the wise advise and warnings. I now see the risks involved in trying to save some money by buying an older version.
"Also 2012 was the last version, using the local vault. However if you overinstall when you upgrade, you will retain the local vault."
Could somebody explain the meaning of local vault and overinstall? Would that mean I should not consider NIS 2011 and only consider NIS 2012 or NIS 2013 as options?
Jerry,
Note also that you don't have to install from the boxed disk if that is what you buy but just use the KEY on your existing installation. However only do this a couple of days before expiry since you lose unexpired time if you use a new installation key .... because you get a new installation timing!
Do it with enough time in reserve to check with CHAT if you do have a problem however.
Personally whenever possible, I only buy from Amazon when it is fulfilled by Amazon from their own warehouse since I was once massively let down by a third party supplier who claimed out of stock after getting the order and charging for overnight delivery. But this was in the early days of Amazon handling third party stuff. Once bitten .....
Recently I've not noticed much difference in price between old and current. Check the Amazon download pricing also since you get the KEY sent to you and don't even have to download!
Hi, jerryscan. V 2012 was the last year dated version that offered the local vault for IDSafe. Later versions only offered the cloud vault.
However, if you installed the 2012 version and upgraded to the later versions by overinstalling and retaining your settings, you would keep the local vault.
That means any passwords are stored on your computer, not in the cloud.
If that doesn't concern you, it's better to have the latest version for improved protections.
Hello
He seems to want to know what you mean by overinstalling I believe.
Hi, jerryscan. In case you're still wondering, overinstalling means installing an updated/upgraded version over your existing install, rather than removing and replacing it.
I hope that's clear.
My sincere thanks to all of you who worked as a team to answer and clarify my questions and doubts. I will now be able to make a better informed decision when placing my order from Amazon.
