C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe being blocked by Norton, I get a pop up for failing hard drive. HELP

I'm getting a pop up and Norton is blocking it but it says I need to back up my computer so I don't loose anything because of the hard drive failure... What should I do? Just keep closing it until Norton decides its severity is high enough? I did a full computer scan and nothing harmful came up and during the scan that pop up from Windows came up 6 times! Is there more I can do or you can do to stop this?! Thanks

Janine

I have ran checks through the hard drive properties and it says it is working properly, all hard drives are working properly!  It shows up immediately on start up and every once in a while when I am on the computer maybe out of an hour or so of being on the computer I will get 3-8 pop ups and I am online and when I disconnect from the interenet it doesn't seem to happen as often! Thank you

Hi JA9Halv82

Have you created a back up on to two separate types of external media?  If not it would be a good idea to do this before doing anything else.

The image of the pop up you have posted is a windows message are you getting any Norton messages if so can you post an image(s)?

Check for windows updates manually and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Have you tried running check disc (see help and support from the start menu) for errors.  It’s requested in normal mode and starts on restarting the computer; it can take a long time so be sure mains power is connected.

How much free space is on the hard drive?

I have ran the disc check and it did take a long time and all came up just fine.... I will try to get a screen shot of the history in the norton and post that now... I can try to do a disc clean up but I doubt that will help anything... I didn't want to do a back up on external hard drive with the fear of a virus entering it during the back up.... Unless you think it should be fine to do a back up?

I have plenty of free space.....

There are a couple of other things you could try. A Windows file scan as well via the Command Prompt, to see if there is a system file problem. Enter this in the Command Prompt, observing the spaces  sfc /scannow and let that run. Also try going to Support/Get Support in the Norton UI, and see if it finds any problem with your Norton installation.

I'm sorry I have no Idea what you mean by Command Prompt..... I will just try to call Norton tomorrow maybe... I have tried everything I can think of and everything that was suggested to me including spending most of today backing up my computer to an external hard drive.... Thank you

ok I found the command prompt and tried to type in sfc/scannow and it says i need to be an administrator to use it.... I don't know what else to do...

Right click Command prompt and select Run As Administrator.

Hi JA9Halv82:

Regarding the screenshot you posted in message # 6, the unauthorized access blocked message for svchost.exe you're seeing in your security history is a normal function of Norton Product Tamper Protection.  A log entry will be created in your security history every time a Windows process like svchost.exe attempts to read/write/edit/delete a Norton file (please see my post here in the Product Suggestions board) and has nothing to do with your hard drive error.

Here's a screenshot of what you should see when you right-click on the shortcut in your Start menu to open an elevated command prompt with administrator rights.  System File Checker (sfc /scannow) will check and attempt to repair any corrupted Windows files, but the error message you posted in message # 3 suggests that you might have a mechanical problem with your hard drive that could lead to a hard drive failure.

Hi JA9Halv82:

Further to my previous comments about a possible mechanical failure, it might be helpful to run a diagnostic scan of your hard drive using a utility like Piriform's free Speccy software.  If your hard drive supports S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology), you should be able to view basic information on the status of your hard drive and export this information to a text file from the Speccy menu at File | Save as Text File.  Documentation for Speccy can be found here.

You mentioned in message # 9 that you had backed up your computer files, but if you have room on your external hard drive and have not already done so you can also use a free utility like Macrium Reflect Free to create a disk image of your hard drive (i.e., a backup of your entire PC to a single compressed image file) that can be used for a system recovery in a worst case scenario if your hard drive eventually fails.

I have finally ran the sfc/scannow in the command prompt and all came back good....  I will try your other options otherwise I still feel this is a virus.... everything has been coming back as working properly!

Ok I have found the S.M.A.R.T. that you had mentioned and even though it says the status is good on my hard drives when I click on it to find out more info I found that it does say that my hard drive is failing.... thank you everyone who has helped out in any way and sorry that I thought it was a virus but I wasn't sure and have never seen anything like that kind of pop up! Thank you for you patience and I hope everyone has a good day/night!

Janine, it's good that you made a back up, because as has been frequently said, it's not a case of if a hard drive will fail eventually, but more a case of when. Back up, always. Then you at least, have somewhere to start afresh. ....:smileyhappy:

Best advice of all.  It not only will protect anyone from the HDD failures but it can also be used to recover from virtually any malware or virus attack.

Imacri  th.gif    I've had Speccy loaded on my PC's for a couple of years.  It's a very good utility to have on one's PC.
