Can i delete "Install Files" folder from my desktop?

Salutations,

After an update to Norton Internet Security 2010, can i delete the “Install Files” folder on my desktop?

That folder has 4 files in it. “downloadinfo”, “NIS10UPEN”, “NIS2010Plugin.dll” and “NISDownloader[1]”.

Sincerely,
Pikachu

Do you mean, delete the Norton installation package? You can - only after the program has been fully installed, however! ;-))

Yes you can but maybe it would be a good idea to copy them first.

Yes, create a backup; move the installer to a flash drive, for instance.

Salutations,

Thanks for the reply.

In that case, i will just leave that folder on my desktop as it is not really big.

Anyway, using the Norton Account update, i do not need to remove Norton 2009 first before installing 2010, weird. But the install was successful. =)

Sincerely,
Pikachu

I think that most people will keep the files on their desktop and some, like me, will copy them off to a flash drive to use for installation on my other PCs. However, the files are always there on the Symantec Server so anyone can download them at any time.

Hello Pikachu,

If you check, you should find that the "Install Files" folder on your desktop is only a shortcut pointing to the actual location of the installation files.

If you wish to keep the installation files, make note of their location then you can move or delete the "Install Files" shortcut from your desktop.

Also, keep in mind that the installation packages will be updated with enhancements or patches as time passes, so they will be renewed/updated from time to time on the Symantec update server. After downloading your program package from Symantec, you can check the build number by right-clicking on the icon, then going to Properties, then Details. So you may want to update your backed-up installation package whenever the engine is updated (this is usually announced in over here in the forum in the shape of stickies), which will result in the build number changing.

I usually keep the latest version of both the Norton Removal Tool and the update package/installer in the downloads file.  That way, if for some unforseen reason, I need to uninstall and reinstall, I can do so without having to go to the website to get the software.

Hi delphinium,

re:That folder has 4 files in it. "downloadinfo", "NIS10UPEN", "NIS2010Plugin.dll" and "NISDownloader[1]".

In another message thread the poster referenced that 10 has a builtin Uninstaller and Re-installer and thought Plugin.dll contained them and recommended saving files if ever needed..

Can you confirm or comment

edit...

OK, I guess the other poster has it wrong?  sounded like other poster thought the .dll included an Uninstaller option.

After install, several addition files are also saved on your system (for Vista there is a shortcut on desktop and files are actually in public download folder)

.

The install file changes (Symantec is tricky here—I suspect it is the dll: NIS2010plugin.dll that is also downloaded) and when you open it AFTER INSTALL, there are options to uninstall NIS2010—NOT to install.

But there is also a text file: downlaodinfor.txt that contains the new key and a URL to load if you need to re-download the install for 2010.

I asume Nav alsoworks the same way.
