I have one desktop and one laptop at home, which I never use concurrently; I only use the laptop on occasional travel. If I buy one license of Ghost 15, can I inactivate the license on my desktop, and move it to my laptop for the duration of my trip, and then move it back to the original desktop? This would save me buying two licenses, one of which will mostly be idle.
What is your concern with the laptop?
Do you simply need one image as a backup so that if your on the road you can quickly get it back to a working state in an emergency, or does the data change enough on the laptop that you will need to be making new images?

Both. When I am on travel, sometime a month or more at a time, I need to make sure new data is backed up, plus I need to be able to recover the whole disk image in case of a Windows crash, which has happened in the past, and more than once. I think I know where you are going: if I just wanted to be able to recover to a "base" state, a DVD image might be enough for a cold restore. But I also have new data to backup during most trips, especially the long ones.
It´s a bummer if I have to uninstall and the re-install...
Yes, that was going to be my suggestion.
To use ghost first on the laptop to make a full image and then install it on the desktop.
Keep in mind I'm not a lawyer, nor a Symantec employee so I really don't know exactly whats allowed.
But I know you need a licence for each system you restore and since the trial version allows you to make an image, it seems like it would be fine to first make an image on the laptop and not need to purchase a licence for it until you needed to restore it.
Obviously it would be a real pain to uninstall and re-install Ghost, especially if you have scheduled backups that would have to be redone and you would also loose the backup history. Any images made would still be good but Ghost couldn't keep track of them after the product is reinstalled.
So I was going to suggest maiking that one base image that could be used to recover the system to a working state and then while your on the road try to keep all new files organized in one or two folders.
I have one system where only the contents of a couple folders hold my important data, so In between images I use a free folder and backup tool to backup just those folders and my email.
If you could keep things organized like that you could periodically compress and encrypt those folders and upload or email them to yourself to get backed up "outside" the laptop.
You also might want to consider the risk your taking by not having a full backup solution or the time involved in manually backup up folders and how much of your time it would take to recreate all the data if you lost everything.
If you find yourself spending several hours each trip manually backing up everything then over the course of a year you may find that Ghost is a very cheep investment.
One of the users here, Red, also posts links to online specials and sometimes you can get Ghost, NIS, and norton utilites for almost free if you deal with the rebates.
Best of luck,
Dave
