If I want to check on a computer that is acting odd, but shows no sign of trouble with a normal Norton 360 scan, I’m to run power erase, then if needed, Norton Bootable Recovery Tool.
But this gives me a question about security.
If my PC is compromised, can I be sure that the resulting disk is not also compromised. In the past you might expect I should go to a trusted PC to make the disk. But if it’s a computer I have access to how long can it be trusted if it is in my control, but gets visits from me, who may have a compromised PC. If it’s a PC not in my control then I can’t trust it. Walled off computers are very difficult to actually maintain walled off, if I would need to download the latest definitions or NBRT install.
In years past a chksum could be used to manually verify files, to satisfy this, but is that possible or does that actually solve the problem anymore.
Thanks to any who take an interest.
