Hello,
Currently the "Safe Web", "Backup", etc buttons on the bottom of the NIS 2012 main screen are tied only to the simple view, which means that if you are set to Advanced view and click one of these buttons NIS reverts to displaying the simple view. The preference for Advanced View is remembered if you set the thumbtack to make the change "sticky" so that when you reopen Norton it goes back to Advanced view like it should.
It is just that if you want to use something like "Safe Web" feature it will only work in "simple" view.
I'd like to suggest that these buttons work in whichever mode NIS is configured for (simple or Advanced).
