Can not do a complete scan

I purchased a new laptop computer that had a free 90 day trial of Norton.  This was purchased a couple weeks ago.  I have never been able to do a full system scan?  This is a brand new factory built HP system?  Every time I try to do a complete system scan it scans for about 20 minutes and then I get a Framework stopped error?  The Laptop is Vista 64 bit.  Is there a patch or something?  The updates and quick scan work fine.
