Can Trojan.poweliks infect external hard drives used for backups?

We have been infected with the Trojan.poweliks.  A Norton rep ran the automatic T.P.  Fix tool on our desktop computer last night.   Not completely sure this fixed the problem but will keep close watch.  Meantime, logging in to this forum on my tablet......question is:  we do complete system backups to an external hard drive.  Is it possible that the virus was transferred to the external device during a backup?  If so, how do we scan the device using the Norton TP removal tool without risking a re-infection of the computer when the device is plugged in to the USB drive?  (We do not back up to the cloud because this has its own virulent set of potential problems.
