Cannot get iTunes on Windows 7 to 'allow' Home Sharing with iphone or iPad

I'm trying to access my iTunes library on Windows 7 on my iPhone / iPad. Have setup Home Sharing on iTunes (Windows 7 / Norton 360) and have also setup Home Sharing on iPhone / iPad. In theory this should allow the 'Remote' app on iPhone/iPad to 'Pair’ with a 'Remote' icon in iTunes. Problem is this 'Remote' icon does not exist in iTunes. Apples forums suggest this could be a Firewall issue and gives the following advice -

"If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries.”

On the N360 forum a reply to topic ‘…how to open port 3689…’ had the following reply from a Norton guy –

“… configure your home share in the trusted connection of norton security map as –

Main UI->Settings->My Network->Trust control and configure your home network

Then, Just try any of the below two:

N360 Main UI->Settings->Firewall

1. Program Rules Tab->Add the location of the exe [presumably iTunes – but not needed as already entered by Norton automatically] here with allow access and try running the apple program if it works fine, if not proceed to step 2 – [DONE but didn't fix]

2. Traffic Rules tab->Add->Allow connections radio button->connection to and from other computers [should read other devices?] radio button->Select any computer or if you know the IP select that IP alone->Select the port details and proceed. That will allow access for the 3689 port.”

I was going to try this (or my interpretation of it) but right at the end of the process N360 gave a dire warning as follows – “Creating a new general rule will override all application rules, and should only be performed by advanced users or at the direction of tech support” – so I backed out.

My questions are –

  1. Is it safe for me to setup these rules and if so

2. Exactly how do I set them up – my guess was they needed to be setup as TCP and UDP rules locally (not globally) for the required IP addresses – my iPhone/iPad and whilst I was at it also setup IP addresses for my Sony AV Amp and separate laptop.

Grateful for any advice!

Update - suspect this issue has nothing to do with firewalls & port blocking as have disabled the firewall on my router (after disconnecting from the internet) and also disabled the Norton 360 firewall. So even with both firewalls disabled I still cannot get Apples so called 'Home Sharing' to work.

So looks like I will have to dump iTunes and find another solution until Apple fixes this.
