Hello. I have an encrypted computer and have not had a successful back up yet. It keeps trying but fails with error message w8. Is this because my harddrive has encryption software? Please help. Thank you.
Hi thewalkers3712.
Welcome to the Norton Community Forums.
I don't think I have ever come across a Norton error message w8 (in fact that does not sound very much like a Norton error message) however I can confirm that Norton does not like encrypted files when it comes to backups. It refuses to back them up. I am not sure why this is the case but it does appear to be so. Therefore if you want to back up encrypted files then I believe you will have to use some product other than Norton 360 - sorry.
If you just have some files that are encrypted you can exclude them from the backup and it should work (in fact I think it will work in any case just exclude each encrypted file and put up an error message) but that does not seem to be what you want to do.
Sorry to be the bringer of bad tidings. Maybe someone else will be able to point you to a way of getting around this but, apart from using a different product I cannot think of one at the moment.
Thank you so much for responding. My whole hard drive is encrypted, so I guess I won't be able to back it up then. At least I know now. Come to think of it, 4 of our 6 computers are encrypted, so I guess Norton-360 is not worth the money. I think I will discontinue the service. I appreciate the information.
Hi thewalkers3712.
Norton does a lot of other useful things. I personally would not give it up lightly even if there were no backup. However if you do not need the backup you might like to consider Norton Internet Security instead of N360... up to you.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
