Cannot log off, restart or shut down WinXP computer after LU NIS 2012

I used LU today; now I cannot log off, shut down or restart Win XP computer. How do I fix this? Thanks.

How odd.

Can you provide us with more information such as, what happens when you try to perform your stated actions.

The more information you can provide the the more helpful it would be to us.

Nothing happens. It just leaves the desktop. It was fine prior to today. The mouse moves but task manager will not open.

Have you tried a hard shutdown?

Mitka

Yes several times

I'd suggest uninstalling with the Norton Removal Tool then reinstalling.

I've also alerted a Symantec Representative to your situation incase it doesn't solve your problem.

Hello digit123,

Can you please give use the version number of NIS by going to support menu, then about? So you can only turn off your computer by pressing the hardware power button?

HI digiti123:

How did you perform the hard re-boot?  Try holding down the power button (on/off switch of your computer) for at least 3 or 4 seconds until your screen turns off, and wait at least 30 seconds before turning your computer back on.

Or do you mean that you successfully performed a hard re-boot and your computer is still locked when you turn it back on?

I can now restart[reboot]  after several after hard shutdowns...Will try a  regular shut down next...Now that works.. OK for now. Weird!. If I have a problem I will report back. Thanks.

digiti,

Keep an eye on the thread in case there are some questions that can help Norton find what happened ... Michaell it one of the Norton Staff (names in red) so that's a direct line and that helps Norton.

This Liveupdate was probably the one that updated to 19.1.1.3 from the release so may have run up against something.

I will keep an eye on the thread..and report back.

I had to use the removal tool then do a  reinstall of NIS 2012 19.1.1.3 because computer was using 100% CPU and it slowed to a crawl. After a reinstall all seems to be well.

I hope it stays -- perhaps an incomplete update or one corrupted file or ....
