Cannot open Word or Excel 2013 file w/o either stopping

I have Win 8 with NIS 20.2.0.19 and just downloaded Office 2013.

Anytime I open a Word doc or Excel file, the app stops. I have seen other posts indicating that this was a problem for Win 7 and NIS 2013.

What can I do to resolve this problem?
