Cannot reinstall Norton Internet Security 2010 after using Norton removal tool !. REVISITED

I googled my problem regarding the reinstallation of NIS and was directed to this thread, which for some reason I cannot post to. The issue was reported as solved but here is my problem.  That thread evidently dealt with Windows 7, and/or a beta version of the product. My situation has neither variable. I run XP and yesterday received a message from Norton about an upgrade for spyware product (my first mistake was downloading it). In order to install it I was told to remove norton with the removal tool (not via Windows Control Panel) and restart and reinstall.  I did all that, and when attempting to reinstall received the "unexpected error" (is there such a thing as an expected error?). I tried rebooting several times but it always refused to download and reinstall. I have had problems before with Norton products and rarely have they been resolved. However, hope springs eternal and I hope that other users that may have experienced the problem with XP might have found a solution, or any suggestions from ANYONE!

Thank you.

Bob

Try this

  1. Download the Norton Removal Tool as well as the Norton Internet Security Installation file to the desktop so that it can be easily found later

  2. Physically disconnect your self from the internet. That could include yanking out the ethernet cable/telephone cable from the back of your computer/turning off your wireless with either the wireless switch on your computer or turning off your router.  This is to prevent any cyber attacks while you are vulnerable.  DO NOT RECONNECT UNTIL MENTIONED!
  3. Back up any identity safe data:

  4. Uninstall the Norton software through the add/remove programs and let your computer reboot.

  5. Upon reboot, run the Norton Removal tool installed earlier.  Upon completion, let your computer to reboot or reboot manually (not quite sure why on Windows 7 the NRT doesn’t prompt a reboot).

  6. Repeat step 4 two more times just to be sure.

  7. Run the Norton Internet Security 2011 installation file downloaded in step 1.  If you are using Windows Vista and above, right click the installation file and select run as adminstrator (as shown in the screenshot below).

  8. Upon the completion of the installation, reconnect your internet.  Then run liveupdate repeatedly until all upgrades are complete.  You may delete the files you downloaded in step 1.

Thanks for the response, however, I was able to contact support (after saying I wanted a refund) and fortunately my tech was able to resolve the problem very quickly.  I really expected the worst, but SRuthy was a real professional and actually knew what she was doing. So I take back most of the bad things I said about Norton (the doggone software still hogs to much resources making my computer run with the speed of a glacier, but it isn't as often as it used to be.  SRuthy installed the 2011 version of NIS and that did the trick. For now, anyway.  Thanks for the response, and thank you SRuthy where ever you are.

Hello brokerbob51

Do you know what method the tech used to install your NIS 2011? Did she just instll NIS 2011 over the top of NIS 2010? NIS 2011 is supposed to be very light on resources. Do you have any other real time security programs running now? I'm glad that you were able to get the program installed, but am concerned that you find it resource heavy.

I had already uninstalled NIS 2010 because of a message to upgrade for some spyware program add on.  When I did the reinstall did not work, so I posted the thread. Anyway, the tech just downloaded the 2011 version to my computer and installed it.  There was no Norton product on the computer when she did that.

As for heavy resource use, I really haven't had time yet to see what issues may arise, if any.  I appreciate you letting me know that but I am a skeptical person.  It's all due to a trauma I had as I child when I was frightened by a Siamese Bat!
