When I right click on a file or folder in Windows File Explorer I can open a menu that includes a Norton file scan choice, but when I click on that nothing happens. This began a few weeks ago. Any ideas?
The scan seems to run in the background, no interface is shown for the scan. When completed, a pop out shows the results.
Clicking on See Details will show you what was found.
That’s right. This is the pop-up that appeared on my screen until a couple of weeks ago. Now it never pops up, which I assumeans no scan has occurred.
I got my image above just before I posted. Be sure you have run LiveUpdate and restarted your computer and test again. Restart, not shutdown and startup again.
All: My side on Windows 10 & 11 I DO NOT get a scan completed dialog when scanning a singular file. I can validate the OP issues. FWIW!!

I can confirm the same inability to right click scan a file or folder in my W11-Home 24H2 laptop with an Intel processor.
Is norton working on this latest malfunction???
I still have this issue verified by SoulAsylum
norton doesn’t seem to care about an issue until someone absolutely humiliates them into action.
Welcome to Avastworld and the illusion of support.
I have heard nothing from Norton about this. I get around the issue by opening Norton, clicking Target Scan, and then using the File Explorer to select the file I want scanned. If I have, let’s say, 4 files to scan, I have to do this four times, and it is a pain in the ass. I used to be able to select a range of files, and then click the “scan these files” prompt. The prompt still appears as an option, but it doesn’t seem to do anything.
@meabels My right-click scan is broken on both my W10 and W11 machines. We suffer the same experience of nothing happening when selecting right-click scan. Thank you for detailing your workaround, I would not have known about it otherwise. As you say, it was much more convenient when right-click scan worked.
I just tested again and still get the results noted in my post above. I noted that if the 360 interface is not open I get the popup in the bottom right corner. If the 360 interface is open the result of the scan is shown.
What Norton 360 version are you using? This is my current version.
What kind of files are you trying to scan?
Below is my version. Mostly I’m trying to scan downloaded files or a thumb drive from an outside source.
FWIW!! Scanning a singular file I will get a notice in the lower right corner of the desktop that the file was scanned. There is a “details” button which when used lists the results. That is as far as the scanning goes with the current version.

Yes. If you open Norton and select “targeted scans” you can then pick out a single file through file explorer and Norton will scan it and return a result. However, this takes three or four more steps than it used to take (right click on the file you want to scan and you’re done), and you can only use this trick one file at a time. So, for example, if you want to scan 5 files you have downloaded, you have to go through this whole multi-step process 5 times, which is a pain in the ass.
I just tested selecting multiple files in Windows Explorer and right clicking on the selection and choosing 360 to scan selected files. That brought up a single popup at the bottom right of the screen. Clicking on See Details shows multiple files were scanned.
@meabels What Norton product and version are you using? Current 360 version is 25.12.10659. What Windows version are you using?
Interesting. That is how it is supposed to work. I just tried to do the same thing, and nothing happened. I am using 360 Premium in Windows 11. I tried it both with the Norton interface open and closed (which shouldn’t matter of course, because 360 is always running in background).
FWIW, my side I get this multiple file selection scan, clicked see results in the popup notification:

Well, I am baffled. What you are getting is exactly what I used to get and nothing about my Windows version or my Norton 360 has changed, but I don’t get the scan anymore. There have been Windows updates since this problem first came up. Wonder if something has changed there. Anyway, thanks for your help. I guess I’ll just keep doing it the hard way.
The latest version of Norton, 26.1.10738 was just announced earlier today. The issue being discussed here was not one of the “listed” bug fixes in this release. Unless “under the hood” bugfixes can be verified of course. With the latest version installed I don’t see any changes.
