Everytime I try to run the backup program Norton stops and states that there is a problem. I've checked my WD My Book for an issues and it's running fine and was running great until I updated my Norton. I have checked for numerous issues but everything appears to be set up correctly and there is still plenty of room on the WD My Book (it's a 640G that I use strictly for my backed up information - I'm a photographer, so I have a lot of pictures I don't want to lose) I am completely baffled as to why this is occurring. I've been working on the problem for about 5 days now. I've even unplugged the WD external hard drive all night in case it needed to reboot only to have it do the same thing.
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3. I took four screen shots of the current settings and the error message I receive after attempting to backup the files to the WD My Book. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.
I cannot back up to my WD my book either....It was working before I installed the lates Norton but now it goes so far and stops. I can backup single items like Quicken for example...but not the whole drive anymore.
This file is the last file I get before it fails the back up......
I too have a similar problem with trying to run a Windows 7 full backup. I can copy single files OK but can not do a full backup. The backup starts and then the external drive disconnects.
Running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. Using eSATA LaCie external drive for the backup.
Hello I did what you suggested following your directions and I was able to back up to my hard drive fine. But now do I try backing it up to my WD my book?? What do I do about all the back ups on my hard drive that is now taking up a lot of space? Do I delete that backup? Thanks so much, Vicki
Ok I backed it up per request...it said 0 files backed up but the back up was successful on my hard drive. I checked to make sure the 'test file' was added to be included but it appears it did not back up the file although it still says that it completed the back up successfully. Now what?
If you are using Windows XP, make sure when you follow the steps to create the test file that you go down to "text document" - this is the file that will be created on your desktop then rename is "test file". Other than this small correction, follow the rest of the instructions and let me know what happens.
I believe you might have created a "new folder" instead of using the "text document" to rename a "text file". I think this might be why you had a problem.
It was after the completion of running the "test file" that I discovered the problem and was able to resolved the issue myself but I wouldn't have found it had I not been given the instructions to do this test.
When I updated my Norton 360 from 4.0 to 5.0 with the new code key the new software did not save my previous settings for running the backup to my external hard drive (Western Digital My Book). You need to manually change the backup settings after the upgrade for it to run properly.
I am having the same issue with the backup to WD My Book failing. It gets to the same file, stops, then gives me the same error message: "There is a backup problem. Make sure the destination drive or device is connected and then try again." I tried doing the suggested fix, but I'm still getting the failure. HAS ANYONE FIGURED OUT HOW TO FIX THIS!!!???
how do i run an update backup? that is backup only files or data that have been added or changed since last backup. windows live one care did this, does norton? it saves time and avoids formating the ext drive each time.
Have you checked the settings for the backup - click on tasks on the main page of Norton 360 then go to "Manage backup sets" and check the destination drive in the "where" tab...... make sure the letter assigned to your WD External Hard Drive is the one listed.
Let me know what you found and if this fixed the issue?
