Am running Vista and Windows 7 on a dual boot system with 2 separate hard drives. Also have a linksys wireless router.
System is on all the time in Vista mode. Was running NIS2010 in trial mode with 25 days left in trial. In AM, found system had rebooted and Norton showed 0 days left. Purchased NIS2010 3 computer version O.K. from Norton but when I try to download it, I get this message
"
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at lc1alt.symantec.com.
Tried all different ways to get to Symantec but get same message. Downloaded a copy of NIS2010 from another web site and attempted to validate it with same message about server not available. Downloaded and ran malwarebytes and it found and cleared 16 problems. Still can't access symantec to download.
Tried Norton Recovery.ISO and get stuck on WINFIXER. can't get past it. Have tried clearing all Norton with Norton Removal tool in safe mode. Still can't get to symantec.
Any suggestions what to try next.

More info on my trouble. Booted to my Windows 7 hard drive and found my Norton still had days left in the trial. Tried to access "mynortonaccount.com" and was blocked. Then open NIS2010 and clicked on subscribe. It asked for my product code which I entered and it activated O.K. So my problem is only with my Vista hard drive for activation.. Don't know what is common to both hard drives that would block me from symantec. Also took my router out of the picture by connecting directly to my DSL modem from the main computer. Only use the wireless for my wife's new pink netbook.
Right now I'm running malwarebytes again and will post reults when it finishes.
Just realized that even though I validated NIS2010 on my WIn7 hard drive, I still wasn't able to access symantec with my Firefox browser 3.5.7.
Can you access any other security sites like Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, or try any other sites like that. It is possible that you have some malware that is blocking security sites. The infection may be only affecting the drive with Vista on it. Are your windows updates up to date?. A special update came out the other day.
If you have the new update, there are some problems with Firefox also. Can you access the sites using IE or are you having the same problem with IE also?
Accessed superantispyware O.K. and am downloading it right now. Malwarebytes is still running. Will run superanti spyware next. The trouble started right after the Microsoft update. It updates during the night and then restarts the computer. The next morning is when I was in trouble. This update is not removable. I tried restoring to an earlier date but that didn't help.
More info. Did a google on blocked symantec and found a message which directed me to
Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
Found this attached info. At the bottom you will see all the sitrs I am blocked from.
Automatically U-p-d-a-t-e-d HOSTS file # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
Malwarebytes found 0 troubles. I just renamed my host file to be xhost and that allowed me to access symantec and validate my NIS2010. Right now, I don't have a host file and will research if I really need one.
It seems that what ever malware or virus I had was deleted O.K. but it had modified my host file so it kept me away from symantec even though the file itself was deleted.
Problem is now fixed. The virus had altered my host file which kept me from accessing symantec. The virus itself was removed, but the altered host file was left. That was my trouble. Doing a google serve on "symantec blocked" led me to this website
It had a good explanation of the host file and had a downloadable fix file which I used. I used the fix on my computer with Vista and WIN7 and also on my wifes netbook with WIN XP. All systems are now running fine with 365 days on my Norton NIS2010
I'm glad you got your problem fixed. If you consider your problem as solved, would you please mark the thread that gave you the answer even if it was your own.? This way everyone will know that the problem is solved and will be able to find the answer quickly. Thanks
