Can't access Internet using guest account - NIS 2013 and Windows 7

As stated in the subject line, I can't access the Internet on my computer's guest account. I've set my Smart Firewall to alert me when programs try to access the Internet then have told it to Allow Chrome when prompted but to no avail.

I've tried removing Chrome from Program Control and repeating the process but I haven't had any luck yet.

Any help would be much appreciated.

What you can do is hit ctrl + r --> type cmd, hit enter --> type ipconfig/all and verify that you  have a lease on your IP, along with an IP address (under your connection adapter).

Then: check in 'settings' in NIS (network --> smart firewall) and check to see if 'block all net traffic' is turned on.

Edit - Alternatively: open settings in Chrome --> scroll down, click show advanced.. --> scroll down until you see proxy settings, then click it --> LAN settings --> Make sure your options are correct. If you're not using a proxy, set everything as blank.

Let me know if it helps. :)

WiFi wil not work in a guest account.

If you have a wired connection try running IE and see if that will connect.

If you think the firewall is blocking it, go into your admin account and turn off the firewall for a while and try again as guest.

Dave

Thanks for the quick response, folks.

Diabolical,

I do have a lease on my IP. IP address is a go as well, hence how I'm talking to you now. :)

Don't use a proxy and Chrome is set up fine. In fact, everything worked without fault before I installed Norton a couple of days ago.

Dave,

I'm wired and IE doesn't work on the guest account either, although everything is fine when I switch off the firewall. It's definitely our perpetrator.

Ah, ok. I asked because I was unsure if you were using a different connection. :)

When you say firewall, do you mean Norton or Windows?

Norton. Windows Firewall got disabled when I made the switch to NIS 2013.

Hmm, well it's weird that one problem is giving you issues. Out of curiosity, have you cleared your cache?

Edit: You could also try a firewall reset. Settings --> Network --> Smart Firewall --> Advanced --> Reset

Tried both. No luck, I'm afraid.

Reset the Norton firewall to default settings and see if it works.

Responding to prompts for allowing programs access is not a "Guest" role, seems more like an administrator action.

Dave

I've already tried resetting the firewall which didn't work. My guest account gets quite a lot of use, hence why this is such a big deal for me.

Your correct and I can now confirm the problem.

I installed a clean version of windows 7 and chrome and setup a guest account.

I had no problems using either IE or Chrome in the guest account before installing NIS 2013.

After installing NIS, neither browser would work in the guest account.

I was however able to get Chrome to work by fixing a DNS server while in the admin account.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15037-dns-addressing-how-change-windows-7-a.html

I used 8.8.8.8 (It's the free google DNS server, I figured since it's Chrome what the heck.

Although thats just a workaround, I'm still unable to use IE for some reason.  It's not just a DNS problem it seems something that IE needs is still being blocked.

I just don't have the time right now to try to diagnose the problem but in the meanwhile you may be able to also get Chrome working.

I think it may be a bug.

NIS 2012 allows the guest account to access the internet as intended.

Both browsers work fine in guest with windows default settings.

Be aware that if you install the older version and use identity safe you need to create a backup in csf (I think) first or you will loose all your logons.

Hi DaveH

In terms of the test scenario above:

  • Is the Windows 7 OS that you installed 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • Is the Automatic Program Control setting under NIS 2013's Smart Firewall settings set to 'Off'?

On my Windows 7 32-bit machine, the Guest account has no problems accessing the internet using both a wireless connection and Internet Explorer 9. Norton Autofix reports my system specifications as follows:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.0.19
Windows 7 Home Premium
7601.17944.x86fre.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333

To capture the above information: Open NIS 2013 > Support > Get Support > Select 'Copy to Clipboard' when the Norton Autofix scan completes and paste the results.

Factors to consider on my machine for testing purposes:

  • NIS 2013 was installed via an in-place upgrade over NIS 2012 (in order to preserve the Local Identity Safe vault).
  • The Automatic Program Control setting for the Smart Firewall was set to 'Automatic'.

Please review the above and advise.

Thanks

I don't have it installed right now.

It's windows 7 Ult 32bits.

Steps to reproduce.

Install clean version of Windows 7

My test system requires video, LAN, and WIfi drivers to also be installed or updated.

Install Chrome browser, ensure both Chrome and IE work fine.

Enable Guest account, switch users to the guest account and again verify IE and Chrome browser work.

Back in the admin account install NIS 2013, update the product, rebooting as necessary until no more updates are availible.

Reboot into guest account, Chrome and IE no longer work.

Change into admin account, both browsers work fine.

change users back into the Guest account, both browsers do not work.

At this point I can tell there is a probem.

In my opinion, NIS using the default settings should not change the intended behavior or the Windows Guest account.

Then I uninstalled NIS 2013 using the option to remove all the data and declining the toolbar.

Reboot, verify the browsers work fine again in both user accounts.

From admin account, install NIS 2012, do all updates and reboots until it is current.

This time in the Guest account both browsers work fine, as intended with defualt settings, just like all previous versions of NIS.

Hi Dave,

I've tried updating my DNS settings to Google's public DNS and also to OpenDNS, but I'm still not able to get Internet on my guest account with either.

I did a clean install and am running Windows 7 64 bit, which maybe has something to do with it.

Cheers.

Hi elsewhere,

I'm running a fresh install of Norton and am running a 64-bit version of Windows 7. Automatic Program Control is set to off (didn't work on automatic). Norton Autofix says the following about my machine:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.0.19
Windows 7 Professional
7601.17944.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.120830-0333
Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success

If you're able to help that would be marvellous.

Cheers.

I'm not having the problem at all now with Windows 7 64bit.

I installed a clean version of Windows 7 ult 64bit, and installed firefox and chrome browser.

Enabled the guest account, all 3 browsers worked.

Installed NIS 2013 with default settings (smart firewall on, automatic program control on).

Updated it all the way and all 3 browsers still work fine in the guest account.

Before I installed windows again, on the 32bit setup I found that I could update from NIS 2012 to NIS 2013 (over the top update) and everything would still work fine in the guest account.

I could even then uninstall NIS from the control panel and re-install it and everything would still work in the guest account.

However, if I uninstalled it from the control panel and then ran the NRT, I could not then directly install 2013 and have the browsers in the guest account work.

Thanks for posting your system details; your Operating System is 64-bit and the work on resolving the issue will now be based on the testing results of installing NIS 2013 on a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit that forum member DaveH provided above (thanks DaveH).

Have you, at any stage, ran the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) on this system or at least before the latest re-install of NIS 2013? Please advise.

At this stage, I would recommend that you start with a fresh install of NIS 2012 in order to get the Guest account up and running. The Norton 2013 products offer new firewall features that are not present in earlier product versions so we need to remove those features from the mix. Uninstall NIS 2013 normally (without the use of the Norton Removal Tool),reboot the system and proceed as follows:

  1. Install NIS 2012 and run LiveUpdate continuously (rebooting where necessary) until the product is brought up-to-date.
  2. IMPORTANT: Leave all NIS 2012 Firewall settings at their defaults. Open all installed browsers while under the Administrator account to ensure that each browser can successfully access the Internet.
  3. Upon completion, log off of the Administrator account and log in to the Guest account. Test each internet browser under the Guest account for internet connectivity. If this is successful, then we'll try for an in-place upgrade to NIS 2013.

Please let us know the ‘Guest’ internet connectivity results for each browser tested before proceeding further.

Thanks

Hi elswhere,

I can confirm that I've never used NRT before. I also don't own NIS 2012 so I'm afraid I won't be able to install this in place of my existing product. I have, however, uninstalled from Control Panel and then reinstalled again, only to experience the same problems.

Are there any other options I can pursue?

You actually do own NIS 2012.  A valid subscription will allow you to use any version currently supported.

There has been a few cases of 2013 keys not working for 2012 but support will help you if necessary.

If you want to try it you can get it here:

http://norton.com/nis12

You would want to uninstall 2013 from the control panel, choosing the option to remove everything

(backup identity safe first if your using it).

Reboot and verify your browsers work fine in the guest account.

Install NIS 2012 and use the default settings (don't change nothing yet).

After you click the "explore" button to start NIS 2012 for the first time, don't bother running live update yet.

Reboot the system to the admin user account (not guest, the same account you used to install it).

Wait a couple minutes to make sure windows and norton are fully loaded and then log of and log into the guest account.

I guess what you do next depends on if it works or not.

You can go back to your main user account and fully update the product or try installing version 2013 on top of it.
