I am completely computer illiterate so please bear with me... I had a virus on my PC so took it to be cleaned up and bought the Norton Internet Security 2010 which has been installed for me. (Yup, not even confident of installing that myself!) I am now unable to access the photographs on my memory card and every time I open "My computer" to try to open the drive, my computer crashes. I know the memory card is virus free as it is brand new and hasn't been in any other computer. There are no error messages so I don't know what is going on. Also, not sure if this is related but I now can't open Norton Internet Security (from the shortcut, from the Start menu or any other way). Again, no error messages, it just makes a "boop" noise at me and is greyed out.
Does anybody have any idea how to access my photos? Not sure if this is a common problem... I phoned the repair shop to ask them and they have no idea what is going on - unfortunately I can't take the computer back in for them to look at at the moment.
There are a couple of things you can try. Sorry if any of the Terms are named differently I got an German OS. First would be to check your Eventlog.
Under Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Eventviewer
Take a look if it shows any errors in the Applications Log and the System Log. Look for the time the last Crash happend.
Secondly you can choose a different drive letter for you storage card. In the hopes that accessing it over a unused drive letter no crash will happen.
Under Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
Right click on your Memory Card and choose “change drive letter and paths.” and select for example M:\ (You might have to restart before trying to access your Memory Card)
Other then that look for someone that can access your Computer over something like LogMeIn.com so that you dont have to transport your computer all over the place. Oh and I would uninstall any Norton Products and use alternatives. Saves you allot of Problems. Just my two cents.
I will return it to the repair shop... The subscription definitely hasn't run out as I only bought it last week when I had the computer cleaned.
In answer to your questions:
(1) I'm using a fairly old version of Windows (2003)
(2) The first time I tried to insert the memory card was yesterday which is when I noticed the issues - I had no reason to open up NIS until then.
(3) No - no other security problems
(4) No - no other unusual behaviour.
And yes, I can open other drives from My Computer.
I'll update you as to what the repair shop say but just thought I'd ask here in case it was a common problem and it was easy to change the NIS settings.
The first error I see here is that your version of Windows is not supported by NIS 2010. (And if I recall correctly, Windows 2003 is a server platform which had the potential to be converted to a workstation.)
The supported platforms begin with Windows XP. You can check here under System Requirements.
Your computer shop should have been aware of this before installing the product.
1) I would ask them for refund on NIS 2010 and install a product better suited to your operating system
OR:
2) Have them install Windows XP (if your system is suitable) and then install NIS 2010.
