The NIS icon disappeared from my system tray after being visible at least initialy when I first booted up this morning. This happened once before a couple of days ago, but this time a reboot and complete shutdown/reboot didn't return it. I am unable to access the NIS control panel. When I click on the shortcut in my Start menu, nothing happens. I believe the program is running. It scans downloads, and it shows as a firewall and virus checker from the computer's control panel, When I downloaded the small autodetect version check program from Symantec, it indicated I have the most up to date version (probably 17.5.0.127 as on my other desktop). Links in this forum to a hotfix for what seems to be a similar situation are no longer functional.
Even though I believe NIS is running properly, this is pretty disturbing, and, of course, I have no way of accessing my settings, running live update, scanning manually, etc.
