Thank you so much!
One thing, though -- I couldn't figure out how to disable the Boot Time Defragging. Can you help me with that?
By looking at the image in Quads last post, you should click on Boot Time Defrag on the left pane of that window. I would assume that there will be a check box for the option. Just make sure you turn off the option.
OK, I am typing this as i am installing Smart Defrag 2, as there are a couple of things to watch out for when installing.
The Free Smart Defrag 2, is 4.7mb in size and is downloaded from Major Geeks.
when installing
a) Click the decline button whe you get asked if you want the App Toolbar from Spigot installed otherwise you end up with a PUP.
b) Then after the install process you will get a "Free Download Now" Dialog box for "Advanced Systemcare Ultimate"
part 1) Untick the Advanced Systemcare Ultimate box
part 2) Click the Skip button
Installation Finished and Smart defrag starts up.
Select the Local Disk in the list (usually C: (has a tiny windows icon on the HD icon)), then select the Automatic Defrag tab below the hard drives list,
Click the blue Turn Off link
On to the Boottime Defrag tab, My Boot time Defrag was turned off by default, so didn't need to touch it.
Now at the time right hand side is the clickable Settings menu, and new Settings dialog box opens.
Under the General Settings untick the Load Automatically at Windows startup (Recommended) Then Click Apply, Then OK
I have added a Screenshot of what the main Window looks like after doing above.
You can see (once mods approve the image) that the Automatic defrag, and Boot time Defrag for Local Disk (C:) arre now listed as No for both.
I have also unticked Recovery (D:).
I will just have to over the next few days see if it follows the settings

Quads
Thank you, Quads, for your explanation -- it was like a light turning on, making things quite simple. As far as those extras while installing the program, I always watch out for those and uncheck them (as is my policy). Especially toolbars, which are such an annoyance. Even after all this, I always check my list of programs on Control Panel to see if there is anything I don't want, and I also check the add-on manager in my browser for the same thing (toolbars can appear there).
Sorry that I couldn't respond last night -- when I posted my previous message, it was after 4:00am (I am in Scotland). Thanks again for all your help, all of you here. Any other advice you can offer?
