Can't access Windows Mail, Windows Update and Gadgets Don't Show - IS2011 Performance Pack

Have just installed the Internet Security 2011 Performance Pack, with Norton Utilities (14.0), and now I can't do any of the above.

Not sure at what point they stopped working, but first I upgraded Internet Security (from 2010), and after reboot install Norton Utilities.

Had a look around this and ran the registry cleaner and defragger.

Now when I try to use Windows Mail I get a popup saying ppcrlconfig.dll is safe, but my accounts are missing and I can't create any new ones.

If I trying and do a windows update from IE8 the form quickly appears and then goes straight away.

All the gadget I had are no longer there, and I can't add any new ones.

Machine is Vista Ultimate 64-bit, 6GB, and I tried restoring the registry backup it took.

Any help, ideas, suggestions or links are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the news. In windows vista, updates are no longer done through the update website. To update your pc search “windows update” with the search feature in your start menu. In addition, with the gadgets, can you try searching for “restore windows gadgets” in your search menu. You can also try starting sidebar.exe using run.

Searching for windows update, and then clicking the match, does the same. It just flashes up the window border quickly and then disappears.

The windows sidebar is running, I can see the options at the top, there are just none of my gadgets on it, and it won't allow me to add any more.

What you are saying that it was working perfectly before Norton scan? If this is the case, you can try using system restore to restore your computer to the time before the problem. Be sure to turn off tamper protection in misc setting (last setting section before parental control). If you don’t disable this, system restore WILL fail as Norton prevents change to its files, which system restore do. Also, was your computer infected by any type of virus?

Not sure why, but everything is working again now.

Reinstalled both products and no difference.

Ran a few cleanups, registry, disk, stopped and started a few services and at some point it's started working.

Mail works and NIS doesn't report the dll is safe. Windows update form appears, and gadgets are visible (didn't need to reselect them it just returned as it was).

I've tried to break it again to find the exact cause but can't.

Anyway, I'm happy now.

Thanks.
