Can't activate NIS 2010; upgraded from NIS 2009

Hi all,

Hope you can help. I just spent 6 hours trying to deal with this mess. A pop-up from Norton appeared telling me that I can upgrade my NIS 2009 to the 2010 version for free, so I gladly obliged. The installation proved successful, however I can't activate NIS -- it keeps on showing "No response from the Symantec server."

OK, here's what I already did:

1. I followed what the One Click Support first suggested, which is to run LiveUpdate until I can't get any additional updates. This didn't work.

2. I did the next suggestion of One Click Support, which is to use the Norton Remover and install fresh using a newly downloaded NIS 2010. Didn't work.

3.  After that I contacted customer support. They spent roughly 4 hours trying to solve the problem by remotely controlling my computer. I got escalated to 3 different analysts. What annoyed me is that in the end, their "elite analyst" succumbed to the idea that it was a virus that was hindering the connection. I asked what virus it was and he said that it was up to the expert technician to determine what it was. And then they told me that I have to pay $99 for the expert technician. WHAT?? $99 for a purely speculative take on why NIS 2010 won't activate?? That's utter BS.

4. That BS from the customer support got me taking things into my own hands. So I searched the Norton Community for similar problems and solutions. The first one I tried is using the Norton Remover 3-4 times then using CCleaner, then installing a fresh NIS 2010. Didn't work.

5. Second and last attempt is that fairly complicated instruction to rename the 82000 folder (can't really remember the exact name) into 82000.iro. It certainly changed how NIS 2010 behaved, but again, it didn't work.

If only customer support would hear my request to just restore NIS 2009, then I wouldn't be resorting to posting in this forum. But no, they want me to pay $99 for their expert technician to "fix" my laptop, which, BTW, haven't had any contact with discs or memory sticks of any kind, and have not had any downloads from non-trustworthy sites. So for it to get a virus that stops ONLY NIS 2010 from functioning well is, really, utter BS.

So, here's my first hello to you all. Hope you can help. :)
