It should have started on its own after the install. What OS? What version of NIS? Was there any other AV or security software on the computer when you installed NIS?

Also, do you mean the "NortonT.M." on the Task Bar or do you mean the N.I.S. icon on the Desktop/Start-up Files?
Are you able to scan with the right click on your mouse? Thatw ay you can see if it is working or not.
Sometimes a reboot does help
Also, be sure that ccSvcHst is loaded in task manager.
