Can't Open Task Manager!

Since I installed Norton V.5 I haven't been able to open task manager.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

My norton 360 version is 5.0.0.125

I tried doing "CTRL + SHIFT + ESC" but nothing happens. I right click on task bar, but I am not able to click on the task manager option (it is shaded gray) If I do "CTRL + ALT + DELETE", the task manager option isn't even there.

Also, whenever I go Start>Run> "regedit", I get the error "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator." But I'm the only user on my computer, and I am sure it says I am an administrator.

I read a little online, and most sites say I have a virus!

Please help any way you can!

To gain access to the registry, you can use the Tool developed by Symantec Security Response:

Now, download and run Norton Power Eraser tool :

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/DIY/index.jsp


Check if it detects any threats and if it does, please provide us the filename and other details. Don't fix any files now, you can fix those after getting confirmation in this thread.

I tried to follow the instructions on that first link you gave me. But I can't seem to "install" it. When I right clicked on it, it gave the options : "open link in new tab/window"  "bookmark this link"  "save link as"  "copy link location"  "send link".

Should I skip this and just run the Norton Power Eraser tool?

Did you download the UnHookExec.inf file to your computer?

You have to download the tool(Select the option "Save link as" to save the file to dekstop), and save it in your desktop. From there, right-click on the file, and then click Install.

Yes I did that, except when I right click on the file, there is not any option to "install".

 

EDIT: My scan with MalwareBytes just finished, it detected 2 Hijack viruses!

Here is a log, I believe this is exactly what was causing the problem. i would still like to take extra steps to ensure security of my computer, so would it be alright for me to continue with your previous instructions? Provided you help me "install" that UnHookExec.inf file.

 

EDIT 2: After restarting my computer, as instructed by MalwareBytes, I still can't seem to open up task manager.

Sure, I would still recommend you to try NPE. Also, check the steps from the following Microsoft Kb to enable Task Manager:
