Can't remove McAfee Security Centre to install Norton AV?

I have had virus issues & am trying to install Norton Antivirus 2010.  It asks me to remove old antivirus programs.  I've tried removing McAfee using the Control Panel 'Add/Remove Programs', but it fails to remove it....& when running the 'set up' for Norton Antivirus, it also can't seem to remove it....so I'm stuck!!!   Help!

It is not the correct behaviour to uninstall a competitor product when our Norton product is installed. Please be informed that no non-Symantec software on your machine will be removed when Norton is installed. Norton will only instruct you to remove any incompatible product from your machine for smooth functioning of our product.

And to remove McAfee's product from you machine you can use the removal tool(MCPR.exe). This tool is available in the below link,

 http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Instructions to use this tool is avialable here,

pchell.com/virus/uninstallmcafee.shtml

Hope this helps

I find it weird that a Symantec Employee refers to a website (pchell.com) that contains viruses. It should be checked beforehand.

Furthermore, OP did not say that Norton install removes McAfee, it merely asked to remove other security SW!

You can find the instructions in the following Knowledge Base Article:

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

If your computer already has malware on it, you also will not get a proper install of your Norton product. Your Norton product should be installed on a clean machine. The malware may prevent the proper install.
