Hi everyone,
I have installed the Norton 360 V.5 in my old laptop and have scheduled regular backup in a portable harddrive. Howeve, my laptop broke down last week and everything was gone.
I have installed Norton 360 in another computer and tried to restore the backup over there. However, Norton could recognize the backup set, but failed to restore to the original location. When I clicked "restore," a report came out showing that the status of restoring each file failed. What had happened to that? I can read the file inside, but it fails to restore.
What can I do? I will be most grateful to anyone for any help!!
Hang on for some help on this -- at least two other people are asking the same question and I've asked for help.
Could you give the WIndows details for the old and new laptops ..... just in case ....
What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit. Do you know the Version ID of the Norton product that you are using on each PC -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.
My friend has figured out that there are some problems with the old internal hard drive and I have replaced it with a new seagate.
So, I am now restoring the files back to the original laptop.
My previous windows system: Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit
My current windows system: Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit
Norton 360 Version: 4.1.0.32
Please help me out!!! All of my critical files are there!!!! THANKS A LOT!!!
OK -- that's not the current version of Norton 360 which is V5 and to which you can upgrade for free but don't try that until the transfer is sorted out would be my advice.
I should have asked -- are the backups uploaded to the Norton OnLine space or are they on a disk or drive somewhere?
You'll have to be patient since I don't use Norton 360 myself and so don't use its backup facilities.
I have upgraded to Version 5 and it happens to be the same.
The backups are all on my external hard drive (Portable).
Thank you so much!!
I hope someone will come along soon who is used to doing this.
Meanwhile, our friend Google produces a work around that you could try since I don't see it being able to harm anything and you do have N 360 installed on the new PC.
Here's a link to a Microsoft answer ... which seems to have been lifted from a blog from a year earlier that Google produced also.
Restore wizzard does not recognize when trying to restore backup files created by norton 360
a. Install Norton 360 on the computer you wish to restore the backup to. Make sure you define at least one backup set on Norton 360 so the default location for backups is set. As you will see this is critical to our success.
b. Locate the backup files you want to restore. Such backups are normally stored in a folder called “N360_Backup” and in that folder will be one or more sub-folders that will contain your backup. The default location is C:\N360_Backup. If your old computer bit the dust you’ll need to remove the old hard drive and mount it on your new computer.
c. Copy or move the folder containing the backup set to your N360_Backup folder NOTE – NOT the N360_Backup folder itself – you need to copy/move one or more of the sub folders with the oddball names to the default location for backup sets on your new computer.
d. From your main Norton 360 screen click on Backup then select Restore. The backup you just moved/copied will not appear. Click refresh and the backup set you want to restore will appear.
e. Select that backup set and restore it as you wish.
I should also mention a Norton thread but it relates to N360 V2 so this link is just for the record to show that Norton has not ignored the problem in the past. I also don't know whether they have built something into the current version to get round this problem or not.

Please let us know how this works out -- I can't take any responsibility but I don't see how copying some files into your new installation can damage anything irreparably.
Thanks Yogesh -- I had a feeling there was a How To floating around somewhere!
