Can't run Norton 360 under Windows 8.1

I can't get the Norton 360 application to run in Windows 8.1 including Identity Safe.  I have tried both the repair and reinstall and the power erase tool.  They both uninstall and reinstall with the same results.  When I look at the running processes, I do see two instances of Norton 360 running.  Both indicate it is 32 bit; I am running 64 bit Windows, don't know if that is an issue.

But the application won't start.  There doesn't seem to be anyway to update or auto repair as other posts suggest.  The Identity Safe/Norton Toolbar does load but does't seem to do anything.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi gtchuckie

Check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Try running autofix by right clicking the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support let it run then restart the computer.  It should tell you if any items where fixed.

Conflict in security software can be the cause of various issues even if the security software has been uninstalled the debris left on the system may not have caused problems until a Norton update has been installed.

Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton?  If so, what is it?

Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?

What trial security software came with the computer?

Are your graphics drivers up to date go to the computer manufactures main site to check if it’s a laptop and if it’s a desktop go to the graphics card manufactures main website?

I have read that for windows 8.1 using a previous revision graphic driver may help check to see if you can roll back the graphic driver by using the web and referencing your OS as I have vista.

Thanks,

Right clicking on the IE tool bar doesn't give me any option.  Norton does not appear in the Windows task bar.

Versions of Norton have been the only security software loaded on this PC send the first release of XP.  This same software ran fine under Windows 7.  All of the drivers and Windows patches are up to date.  This is a six year old dual Xeon PC; there is nothing original left.  When I installed Windows 7, it was on a new hard drive (completely clean).

I will need to verify the correct graphics drivers.

Thanks again

You need the latest version for it to be compatible with windows 8.1

Hi gtchuckie

From your first post I translated, They both uninstall and reinstall meaning that you had downloaded and run the Norton remove and reinstall tool which will remove and reinstall the latest version v21.1.0.18 which is compatible with windows 8.1.  If this is what you have done then a clean reinstallation of the Norton product is an option.

Can you please repost to say if you have used the Norton remove and reinstall tool, the Norton removal tool, did you have a trial version of Norton on the computer?

Yes, I have tried this. And tried again yesterday.

Trial software has never been loaded on this system.

Per another post, I did find the an audio driver was incorrect.  But this had no effect after again cleaning and reinstalling.

Are there any log files that can be used to verify correct removal of Norton 360?  I have seen some issues with other software where a removal tool did not have the rights to delete a directory which caused problems.

Thanks

Hi gtchuckie

Here’s a process you might like to try to remove Norton.

Run malwarebytes to deal with any potentially unwanted programmes that Norton doesn’t deal with.

Restart the computer.

If you use the identity safe/vault and it is local and you would like to keep it local do not use the process below as it will only allow the identity safe/vault to be on line.

Please repost if you would like to keep the identity safe/vault local.

Log into Norton management on the link below using your Norton account email address and password, click on my account, click on product details.

Click on the yellow download button and save the download.  Which will be Norton products latest version (unless there is a new product upgrade currently being released in a phased manor).

Make a note of your current Norton product key from this page.

https://manage.norton.com/

If you use ACT! or WinFax, back up those databases before you proceed.

Download Norton removal tool link below.  Running the Norton removal tool will remove other Norton products that are on the computer.

www.Norton.com/nrt

You’ll need to backup or export in both formats your identity safe and any other users identity safe if it is used, before doing the below.

Physically disconnect from the internet (unplug the internet cable or disable the wifi).

Uninstall Norton using revo uninstaller (select advanced option) to uninstall Norton.

Restart the computer.

Run the Norton removal tool.

Restart the computer.

Run C cleaner and then check in programme files, programme data and common files for any Norton/Symantec files or folders and delete them.

Restart the computer.

Norton will automatically request an internet connection when it has failed to connect to the server, connect to the internet and click retry at this point norton is active connecting to the internet at an earlier time may have the computer unprotected and connected to the internet.

Install Norton and follow the prompts to activate it, run live updates as many times as it takes to get, no more live updates, restarting as requested.

Check your identity safe has data if not import the data.

Malwarebytes

The link below needs the basic version downloaded not the trial or the pro the same when installing to avoid any real time protection which should be turned off as it can conflict with your security software.  To download latest version top RHS of page.  Install and get updates.  The site for the downloads of the software is OK but don’t click on the adverts.

Revo uninstaller

When selecting the type of uninstall there are different options relating to depth of search it can then provide a long list in some cases of check boxes that need careful examination, it shows what boxes you need to check, its doing this to get the user to buy the pro version I think.  When software is uninstalled using the windows add/remove programme it can leave some information behind which if there’s enough of it, it can cause the computer problems.

For the free version bottom of the page left hand side button, third button up.

C cleaner

C cleaner has two useful buttons, cleaner and registry, cleaning the registry can cause serious problems so it is best to leave it alone.  If you do use the registry cleaner button when it has finished there is a prompt to save the data removed to the documents folder, this data can be replaced by double clicking on the folder.

On the left hand pane of the cleaner user interface there are check boxes that can be unchecked so that the files in these locations will not be deleted.

C cleaner is freeware (5mb), you might like to do some research on the web about C cleaner?

If you have any questions please ask before starting.

I have tried this six times over the last couple of days.  It doesn't work.

The installation doesn't fail.  The processes load.  The program just doesn't start.  I even tried replacing the graphics card pulling one out of another computer (that is upgraded to Windows 8.1 and Norton 360 works fine).

Thanks for your help.

Even though you can't open the program, can you update it by clicking on the icon in the tray and selecting "Run LiveUpdate"?

I recall some issue with Lenovos and Acers that was resolved with a recent live update.

Dave

Thanks,

It doesn't show up in the tray.  Windows does see that it is running in the Action Center.

It's very odd.

I don't have Norton installed on my windows 8 system at the moment so I'm not sure if this will work.

But go to the metro screen, scroll a little to the right until you see the "down arrow" that brings up the list of installed programs and see if there is a listing next to 360 for live update.

Is this system a Lenovo or Acer?
