Can't scan - NIS 2009

I just did a first install, replacing Trend Micro. No virus issues at that time. The install was successful, but I cannot scan. The scan starts, but continues to show 0 items scanned and then hangs. At that point, the program cannot be terminated, either by Stop, Pause or Task Manager. My only recourse is to reboot. Tech support chat has been unable to correct the problem, even with a fresh remote installation. So at this point I’ve paid $60 for a product that doesn’t work. Any help out there? Thanks!
