I believe Yahoo used to use CA but from some messages Google turned up, they may now be using a branded Norton which would explain his action.
I inadvertantly installed AT&T Yahoo Online Protection on a Win SBS2003 server. Halfway thru the install I got an error message that the product was not intended for servers. So I dutifully tried to uninstall it via the "uninstall AT&T Yahoo applications" from the start menu. This got rid of two of the three items, but the base components item won't uninstall.
I've unticked the yop.exe item from the startup tab of msconfig-- no change. I see the AT&T Yahoo! Applications item in add/remove programs and it only displays one line "AT&T Yahoo! Base Components". I select it, click Uninstall, it asks me if I'm sure, an "uninstalling" box pops up for a few seconds, and I'm back to where I started... base components are still there with the "uninstall" button grey, I hit select all, the uninstall button becomes active, I can repeat the uninstall but the base components item never disappears.
I downloaded the Norton Removal tool and it doesn't seem to have an effect either. It extracts and presents a small box labelled "Norton Removal Tool" and only displays an "OK" button. Clicking 'OK' closes the box with no messages. If I hover over the box, I get a mouse pointer that, if I click on it, gives me a windows explorer screen for a temp folder which shows two named items: SymNRT.exe (2442 KB)and SymNRT.loc (326 KB), both dated 9/29/08. I've dragged these items out of the folder to the desktop, clicked on the exe on desktop and the behavior is the same-- empty box titled Norton Removal Tool with just the "OK" button in it.
Any ideas on how to get the balance of this removed?
Well, I have since reinstalled SBS2003 so I no longer have the problem, but yes, I should have pointed out that the AT&T Yahoo protection software is indeed a Norton Security Center product including Norton Antivirus, Liveupdate, a spyware package and a firewall. It was reviewing help for the product’s faulty uninstallation that led me to this site. And, yes, back before the AT&T takeover of SBC, I believe the protection software was a CA offering.
I believe the AT&T package isn’t using the latest Norton. Using the AT&T package I would not recommend. If you want superior protection then I suggest getting NIS 2009. Go the eicar test site and see what happens when you try to download those files. The AT&T package is a stripped down version of Norton and not Norton itself. I wouldn’t trust it as much as I trust my ex wife.
Gee, that's sad. My ex and I are best friends.
But the advice is pretty good. I think the present package of Norton is right on, and actually worth the money.
Off topic but ex’s can never be friends. Your ex’s for a reason. Think.
So let me see here. Your trying to use the Norton Removal Tool to unisntall AT&T software. May I ask why? The Norton Removal Tool Removes Norton products not AT&T products.
