Carbonite won't work with Norton Security 2009 Smart Firewall

Try the following:

1. open Product interface

2. Click on Settings>Miscellaneous> Disable Norton Product Tamper Protection

3. Click ok

4. Run the liveupdate

5. Restart the computer

6. check if able to open the carbonite software

7. re-enable - Norton Product Tamper Protection

8. Let is know if this works

That didn't do anything, but thanks for the reply.

To be clear on one point though, Carbonite will run.  It is just unable to send transmit files to the online backup servers.

Turn the Smart Firewall back on and enable the Automatic Program Control.  The delete the two rules for Carbonite and next reset the Firewall (Advanced Settings > Firewall Reset > Reset[+]).  Reboot your system and then run Carbonite manually.  Let us know how this goes.

Hi spach1975,

Apart from what dbrisendine has suggested above,  you can try to add the executables for Carbonite program again and configure the firewall rules accordingly. You can use the following information for creating the firewall rules:

"Carbonite Secure Backup Engine"
C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\CarboniteService.exe
Rule: Allow, Direction: Outbound, Computer:Any, Communications:Specific, Protocol: TCP and UDP, Port 53
Rule: Allow, Direction: Inbound, Computer: Any, Communications:Specific, Protocol:TCP, Port 663
Rule: Allow, Direction: Outbound, Computer:Any, Communications:Specific, Protocol:TCP, Ports 80 and 443

"Carbonite User Interface"
C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\CarboniteUI.exe
Rule: Allow, Direction: Outbound, Computer:Any, Communications:Specific, Protocol:TCP and UDP, port 53
Rule: Allow, Direction: Outbound, Computer:Any, Communications:Specific, Protocol:TCP, port 80

"COM Surrogate"
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe
Rule: Allow, Direction: Outbound, Computer:Any, Communications:Specific, Protocol: TCP and UDP, port 53
