I am attempting to safely and successfully install NIS9 from CD. This is the first time I am connecting my pc to the internet (cable 5Mbps), and the first time I am installing security software. I am a beginning level computer user but I am trying to learn as much as possible and do this on my own.
It seems like a Catch 22 that it's not safe to connect to the internet without security protection (infection in one to twenty minutes), yet one cannot install NIS9 without being connected to the internet for the time it takes to install and update NIS9. And since my CD version of NIS9 is now 10 months old and 3 patches out of date, it will require alot of updating and so a fair amount of time to complete.
What exactly are the security risks when installing NIS9 from CD?
If I want to be as safe as possible during the installation process, should I purchase a hardware router for firewall protection, in addition to leaving Windows Firewall enabled until NIS9 disables it? Or is that too much paranoia?
BTW, I have carefully gone through all the online Customer Support information on NIS9 installation, but it does not go into this issue of security during installation.
