Release Notes
v5.74.8198 (11 Nov 2020)
Note, this version received a small patch update (v5.74.8198) to fix a settings bug. This patch update will be applied automatically unless automatic updates have been disabled. https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/release-notes
...Aside from that, we are applying an update to pull people running outdated versions of CCleaner up to the latest version so that cleaning definitions match the Windows and browsers from today instead of yesteryear.[...]
I hope someone at Avast / Piriform remembers that Win XP and Vista users cannot update beyond CCleaner v5.64 (see the CCleaner support article Which Versions of CCleaner Work with Windows XP or Vista?) when they start pushing out these forced updates. For now I'm assuming these forced updates will only affect Win 7 and higher users with CCleaner v 5.74 who haven't disabled the scheduled "CCleaner Update" task discussed in bjm's post <above>.
[Tip] Disable Automatic Updates for Software Versions in CCleaner - November 13, 2020
[...]
Now CCleaner team has implemented automatic updates to new software versions in CCleaner free versions as well. So if a new version of CCleaner is released, the CCleaner program installed in your computer system will automatically download and upgrade to it.
[...]
NOTE: I noticed that CCleaner creates a task in Task Scheduler to automatically check for new software versions. It checks for new software versions availability twice daily (after every 12 hours) and whenever you restart your system and sign in to your user account.
To permanently disable automatic updates feature in CCleaner, you'll need to disable or delete this scheduled task as well.
Stephen CCleaner:
Hi all, we're aware of the dump issue and are working on it. It doesn't happen every time you close the app, it's a bit more nuanced than that. We will also clean up any dump files this has produced when we fix it. They're typically less than 100KB each so shouldn't cause any serious issues in the meantime. [...]
So, as of v5.74.8198 Smart Cleaning will stay off if you switch it off, and CCleaner will only remain running in the background if Smart Cleaning or AutoUpdates is enabled.
Aside from that, we are applying an update to pull people running outdated versions of CCleaner up to the latest version so that cleaning definitions match the Windows and browsers from today instead of yesteryear. [...]
If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. If I don't respond immediately, you may need to PM me to get my attention. Thanks.

We've fixed the issue where the Smart Cleaning could be turned off by toggling the Automatic Updates setting. This means CCleaner should only run in the background if either Autoupdates or Smart Cleaning (or both) are enabled. We deemed this the more serious bug so we fixed this first.
The dump issue will take a bit more time to resolve, but it is under investigation. The dump files are not particularly large but when we apply that fix we will clean up any dumps generated.
