CCleaner users who use this utility to clean their Firefox browser should be aware that there has been a bug reported where CCleaner (any version, I assume) may remove custom settings in Firefox 79 browser extensions....

Just an FYI that CCleaner v5.70 was released today (06-Aug-2020) and includes a fix for this Firefox 79 cleaning bug.  I've posted release notes in the new thread CCleaner v5.70.7909 (Released 06-Aug-2020).

So Microsoft's Nanny strikes again?

I ran CCleaner yesterday but I unchecked Firefox Internet Caxhe for safety -- I'll check for updates and run again with FF IC checked.

         Here is Microsoft's description:
Certain installers for free and 14-day trial versions of CCleaner come with bundled applications, including applications that are not required by CCleaner or produced by the same publisher Piriform. While the bundled applications themselves are legitimate, bundling of software, especially products from other providers, can result in unexpected software activity that can negatively impact user experiences. To protect Windows users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects CCleaner installers that exhibit this behavior as potentially unwanted applications (PUA).

In support documentation, Microsoft noted that PUAs are not categorized as viruses, malware or other types of threats, but such as apps could “adversely affect endpoint performance or use” and offer to install other apps that qualify as PUA.

I haven't had a chance to read any posts about the WD detection but on my machine that's running WD, installed CCleaner wasn't detected.  I guess it is just the installers.

Hi bjm_:

According to Avast employee Dave CCleaner's post today in the CCleaner thread Windows Defender Reports CCleaner as "Potentially Unwanted App" [fix pending], the standard CCleaner installer was detected as a PUP because it was bundled with the CCleaner browser.  Avast has re-posted the CCleaner standard installer without the bundled browser and claims this should fix the "false positive" detection by Windows Defender, but right now I'm not 100% certain that was actually the reason for the Windows Defender detection.

It appears standard installers for Defraggler, Recuva and Speccy are also being flagged as PUPs by Windows Defender, and those installers will apparently be fixed as well once Avast confirms the bundled CCleaner browser is the cause of the detection.

CCleaner, one of the most popular cleaning and system optimizations app for Windows, is now detected as a potentially unwanted application, or PUA, by Microsoft’s antivirus engine.

Microsoft is now detecting the popular CCleaner Windows optimization and Registry cleaner program as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) in Microsoft Defender.

In a new threat entry added today to the Microsoft Security Intelligence site, Microsoft is now classifying CCleaner as a PUA:Win32/CCleaner threat.

This page does not provide any information as to why Microsoft is now classifying CCleaner as a PUP/PUA, but Microsoft has stated that they do not support Registry cleaners and that they should not be used.

I'm not certain, but APMichael's 27-Jul-2020 post in the CCleaner thread Problem with Firefox 79 indicates that using CCleaner to clear the Internet Cache (and perhaps even Compact Databases) of Firefox 79 will trigger this problem.  See the 09-Jul-2020 Mozilla Add-ons blog entry Changes to storage.sync in Firefox 79 for more information on how extension data is now stored in Firefox 79.

Kudos to Krusty13 for posting about this CCleaner bug in the Norton Tech Outpost thread Firefox 79.0 to be Released July 28.
