ccSrvHst.exe running but with a Blank User Name... Why?

BoneHeadGolf, I did a little Google searching and this symptoms seems to frequently occur if Terminal Services are disabled. Please see this winhelponline.com article on how to re-enable this service and let us know if that helps.

Hi BoneHeadGolf:

Did Reese's suggestion work?

I already have Terminal Services running on my systems, maybe I will disable to test this.

Please advise.

Hi Reese - Thanks for that google find. Terminal Services was enabled and already running on my system and the Users logged in appear under the Users tab as expected.  However, I think the article is trying to solve the problem of User Names not appearing under the Users tab, my problem is related to processes running under the Processes tab without a User Name associated.

Thanks again for all those who had replied to this thread.  For now, I think this one will remain a mystery.

Hi BoneHeadGolf,

I was going to try an experiment but perhaps you could save me the time by clarifying whether or not the Windows account you used to install NIS is your user account or have you re-enabled the built-in administrator user account and log into it when you're installing new software?

Thanks,

NerdBird

BoneHeadGolf,

Right now, is your NIS running normally? Are you able to access the UI and run scans and such?

I was troubleshooting an issue similar to this but with Norton 360, also on Vista Home Premium. I saw that the ccSvcHst processes had no usernames, but after disabling UAC and rebooting, they have names ("SYSTEM" and "user").

Have you tried disabling UAC?

NIS 2010--17.5 Tried turning off UAC on my one account (admin) Vista 32 bit ultimate, and rebooted still blanks names

for both ccSvcHst processes.

But NIS has NO problems as I posted before, so I am not concerned about the blank names in Task Manager.:smileywink:

Hi OscarL -

Yup, NIS 2010 is running fine, no problems that I can detect at the moment but then again I never really did have a problem except for noticing that ccSvcHst.exe was running with a blank User Name as the owner under the processes tab in task manager.  I also have UAC enabled and haven't disabled it, probably won't do so since I prefer to always keep it enabled.

One other anomaly I noticed, from the services table under Computer Management, I'm unable to start/stop/pause/resume the Norton Internet Security service, these functions are grayed out.  This also leads me to believe ownership and privileges are not properly set. I typically use an account that has full administration rights and is in the local administrators group, it's the same account I used to reinstall NIS 2010.

Go figure:smileyindifferent:,

Hi NerdBird - I hadn't re-enabled the built-in administrator user account to reinstall NIS, I used a windows account that has full admin rights to do the reinstall.  When I purchased the system, it came with NIS 2007 pre-installed.  Probably was pre-installed with the built-in administrator account and perhaps that's why I now see a blank User name after reinstalling the NIS 2010 product.

Just for yuks, I enabled the built-in administrators account, logged into that account and checked the User Names in the processes tab but still blank. Of course I really should remove NIS and reinstall again this time with the built-in admin account to see if that makes a difference.  Perhaps when I get some more time I can play with that.  Thanks for the thought, you may be on to something.
