ccSvcHst and svchost - High CPU Usage

Hello-

I just found these forums after googling the processes in question after narrowing down severe performance issues i am experiencing on a very old desktop which is running Norton AntiVirus.  The problem is when my computer will suddenly slow down to a snails pace and becomes nearly unusable which seems to occur randomly although it also seems to happen whenever idle scan activated.  I finally made the correlation between the two and disabled my idle scan on Norton today but have already experienced the problem two more times since then; both times it seemed to occur when i was not using the computer for a relatively short period of time, less than an hour.  when i open up task manager(which btw takes nearly a minute to load when this occurs), i quickly see that ccSvcHst.exe is using 100CPU.  i also experience this problem and sometimes i open task manager and find one of the seven(yes, 7) copies of svchost.exe is using alot of memory as well as 100CPU on occasion.  the ccSvcHst.exe issue will often subside after 20-30 minutes or so and the computer will return to normal.

Here are the stats for my computer and Norton which has run a full system scan this morning with no issues.

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3
  • Hewlett-Packard Pavilion
  • AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+
  • 2.17GHz , 512MB of RAM
  • Norton AntiVirus Version 16.8.0.41

Any help is appreciated and hopefully I can get this issue resolved.

Thanks

thanks....so these issues are actually directly related to my norton antivirus?  i did what u recommended, but when i went to apply the changes it asked for the duration time to turn off silent mode...i went ahead and selected the maximum, 6hrs, but is there a way to disable it for longer or would this be a bad thing?

and also while i have ur attention, i have another strange issue that maybe u can help me with....

often times when i am watching a video on youtube or through my browser(mozilla), my computer will randomly shutdown and restart on its own.  this will sometimes be accompanied by the computer getting very loud  before it then restarts...this occurs most frequently when i have been watching a video for longer than say two or three minutes.

thanks again

Hi ktx49,

This sounds like your computer is overheating, which triggers an automatic shutdown/restart after the fan tries and fails to deal with the excess heat.

Hello ktx49

If your computer is overheating, you can try opening up the case and blowing out the dust from the insides of the computer and especially around the fans. That should help to keep it a little cooler if all the fans are working.

^yep. thats what i figured, but it only occurs when i watch videos....is this because the graphics card is running hot?

Running Flash content will give your CPU a workout.  Two or three minutes would build up some heat.

Hello ktx49

Have you updated your adobe flash player and shockwave player and the other Adobe products and also Java? Are you running the newest Java and have you deleted the older ones? If you are running older versions of those programs, they could be causing problems also.

Do you have the newest vid card driver that your video card can use considering it's age and resources of the computer?

Hey KTX49,

I found the Norton team particularly useless on this subject (lots of questions, no answers just like you - believe me, they'll keep asking you questions without getting anywhere near solving the problem), but another kind user pointed me towards this -

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Possible-Solution-CCSVCHST-EXE-Proble...

it worked for me !

I can assure you I was having exactly the same problem as you with the same level of frustration over the process ccsvchst.exe running the CPU at 100%.

It takes only a few minutes and if it doesn't work you haven't lost much time.

Good luck

You may need to explain further.  The link does not appear to be working.

Hi delphinium

umm, perhaps 'guysp' is pointing to this

  Possible Solution CCSVCHST .EXE Problem

Isn't disabling protection putting your computer at risk? Plus during scan the CCsvhhost & svhost svchost might be high.  Plus, I believe defrag is triggered by svchost?

Hi Tywin7

umm,...just the messenger... not advocating disabling protection.

have you seen this Topic from 'guysp'

Cheers

Yeah I have. I have no idea what's going on... Is there a background scan/defrag going on?  Right now, my computer SVHost and ccvhost reads at 0%. My overall CPU is 6%

I believe the solution was to disable AV protection until the computer is restarted and then to restart the computer.

Yeah, same usage stats here.

I am however somewhat excessive with regard to disabling 'startups', 'services', 'features', 'apps',  and any/everything else I can easily toggle as required.

Bobby53 seems happy
