Dowlnload, install, update and run the free version of Malwarebyes from www.malwarebytes.org and then post the resulting log to this post so that the Gurus can check it out to ensure that all malware has been removed.
Can you advise what version of NIS you are using? Go to Help&Support>About
If your NIS version is 16.7.2.10, then you most likely need to apply the latest hotfix to the machine that has the ccSvcHst.exe error. Please visit this email thread. You don't need to apply the hotfix to your other machines that don't have this error.
The version of NIS 2010 I am running is 17.5.0.127, which according to update checks on the website is the most recent.
As for the OS its XP SP3
No new applications installed recently, or BETA systems, or other security products. Everything was fine and dandy until about a week ago then it all went pearshaped.
After a recent update I got the above message. Once this message appeared and was accepted or cancelled, NIS 2010 would stop running and not work again until I reboot. If I got to it before the message appeared and tried to perform a Live Update, it would start processing for a while before the message appeared once more and I was back to square one.
The latest version is 17.6. It was released just a few days, and it is only released in a controlled way -> not everyone gets it first, Symantec is testing that do it has any errors.
You can try to run LiveUpdate manually to get the update, but you have to run it several times to get it....
Well, tried a manual update and the Norton website tells me I am up to date after checking. However, when I can get NIS 2010 to work long enough to check the version it tells me I am still at 17.5.
Automatic update will still not work due to the ccsvchst error, although it does tell me that it needs attention. The whole performance of the machine continues to be poor while this error exists and no I dont have a floppy drive.
Any further ideas, or ways I can update to the latest version outside of the above?
All help greatly appreciated as its doing my head in

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
Selecting Cancel does not appear to do anything, with both options causing NIS 2010 to shutdown. Trying to manually open NIS doesnt work. However, sometimes it will restart on its own, but again the error message will appear without warning leading to the same results.
Since my last post I have also installed and run Malwarebytes AntiMalware program as mentioned on another thread in here to see if malware is the issue. However, even this hasnt helped.
Unfortunately now I can only suggest to reinstall the product using the Norton Removal Tool.
Here are the steps:
0. If you had Identity Safe data, first (try to) back-up it
1. Download Norton Removal Tool (www.norton.com/nrt) and the latest Norton Internet Security version (www.norton.com/nis10) 2. Uninstall Norton Internet Security via Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs or from the Start Menu 3. Reboot 4. Run the Norton Removal Tool 2-3 times to erase all the remaining files and registry keys (This will remove every other Norton products as well!!!!), do a reboot after every run 5. Reboot 6. Install Norton Internet Security by the downloaded setup package, and activate it with your product key 7. Run Live Update manually until you get no other updates
I have done as suggested, removing the old NIS and installing the new. The good news is that I am now on 17.6.
There were 17 updates which downloaded successfully, although after rebooting I got the error again (although with different references).
I restarted once more and managed to download another update before a Windows "Data Execution Error" window popped up. It didnt seem to affect the Live Update though.
I rebooted a couple more times and things seem to work okay, although there is still a bit of a speed issue (which I noticed wasnt a problem when I uninstalled NIS). I will keep an eye on things over the next few days and let you know how I go on. The important thing is that my protection is up to date which the goal.
