"Checking security settings" takes ten minutes!!!!

I have installed NIS 2010 onto all of my office workstations (7).  I usually find home versions are far better to understand than business versions but having looked at the settings in NIS 2010 I may have got this wrong; complex or what?

Anyhow all of my staff have been complaining about the slow boot up times and it is affecting my PC as well (all of us are running Win XP Pro with all the latest updates patches etc).   Once I login I go off to make a coffee, check the server wash the car etc and when I return to my amazement my workstation is still stuck in "checking security settings".  Eventually it loads up but I am also noticing speed issues with my browsers.  I have disabled smart firewall as we have a router with a firewall included but with or without does not appear to make any difference.

We have a high speed internet connection and we run a Win 2003 server again fully updated and patched.  Most DNS settings are set on automatic but mine has the server IP address entered and so this inconsistency suggests this is not an issue.

I am on the brink of ordering Eeset NOD as this is running on a Win 2000 machine and we have with no issues (NIS 2010 does not run on in 2000 machines hence it was not installed on that one).

I would be grateful for a solution because this is driving me mad and I don't have a spare day to get my head around all of the complex settings in this product.  Can someone help please?
