Choosing VPN Protocol no longer there in the windows 10 install

Hopefully this update for norton 360 will come quickly as mimic is the only one that works here.

It is available on my android mobile phone and setting up the mobile hotspot is so much extra work.

Perhaps the support team could give us an idea when it will be available again. including on windows 11 24h2.

For some users, the VPN protocol settings have disappeared only in the current version.

It seems that this issue has still not been rectified in Norton 360 for Windows. Really annoying!!!

Or is it the message to drop Norton???

In Norton 360 there is this file C:\ProgramData\Norton\VPN\Vpn.ini, and in it the key PreferredProtocol=?

I don’t see the entry or rather the key “PreferredProtocol=?” The only key using “Preferred” is PreferredLocation…” Is the missing or absent key one I need to add to the VPN.ini file so that other protocols can be chosen?

In my Norton VPN, under it is PreferredProtocol=:

PreferredProtocol=automatic
PreferredProtocol=wireguard
PreferredProtocol=mimic
PreferredProtocol=openvpn_udp
PreferredProtocol=openvpn_tcp

I thought you have Norton Secure VPN installed. If so, you should not be able to install 360 at the same time. The folder you quote shows Norton\VPN, not Norton\360.

Norton 360 does come with VPN, not as separate install. In the Norton folder there is a folder “VPN”.

Where would I put
PreferredProtocol=:
PreferredProtocol=automatic
PreferredProtocol=wireguard
PreferredProtocol=mimic
PreferredProtocol=openvpn_udp
PreferredProtocol=openvpn_tcp

Here is a portion of my ini file that I copied. Where would I insert the “PrefeerredProtocol=:” the new ini keys?:
………………………………………………..
MigrationDone=1
MimicCredentialsValidity=1761379719
PreferredLocation={“country”:“CA”}
RecentLocationList=[{“country”:“CA”},{“country”:“MX”},{“country”:“BE”},{“country”:“FI”},{“country”:“DK”}]
ServiceStartTime=1760789839

……………………………………………………………………………….

Norton 360 and Norton VPN share the same codebase.
Paste this key with one of the protocols to see if it changes from automatic.

PreferredLocation=
PreferredProtocol=automatic
RecentLocationList=

I made the changes, but no change. If mimic or another protocol becomes important or critical to me. I just get a 3rd party VPN like Proton or NordVPN

Did you enter the PreferredProtocol=mimic key there and save the changes you made?

I placed one key PreferredProtocol=mimic after the PreferredLocation Key and now I have all the choices available. I’ll see how it goes.

Edit: I decided to try choosing automatic in the list to see if the other choices would still be there. Once I chose auto, no choices were available in the GUI interface and in the ini file, PreferredProtocol=automatic was in the file. But if I changed the PreferredProtocol back to mimic, and saved, mimic was bulleted and the other protocols were listed. I was hoping just to have the list available to be able to go from one to another without having to change the ini file each time. My bet is if I chose wireguard as the protocol, the ini would list wireguard as preferred but the other choices would still available and it would be wireguard as the preferred. Automatic as the preferred takes away any of the other choices it seems. I was hoping just to have the list available at all times like it was way back in January so I could just choose different protocols even after choosing Automatic.

WireGuard is used by default, so you can set your preferred protocol first in the Vpn.ini file and then in the protocol switcher in the Norton 360 VPN settings. Could you please take a screenshot of the VPN protocol settings window?

Here is the window with PreferredProtocol=mimic (same if I set it anything other than Auto).

Here is what it is with the protocol set to auto

Norton 360 VPN has not yet received a protocol split into OpenVPN (UDP) and OpenVPN (TCP).

Are you a beta tester? Wonder when this will be released to everyone.

Norton 360 just updated yesterday and I now have the version that you referred to. If no PreferredProtocol key is in the ini file, there are no choices. The same if one puts PreferredProtocol=automatic. Only if you put the key …=mimic or anything other than auto, do the choices show. Also, if the choices show and you bullet auto, auto is then in the ini file and no choices appear afterwards. Since I now, if understood correctly, use wireguard, which you state is the default protocol used for auto, the choices stay. Before February 2025 , the choices always appeared but without the new split for OpenVPN. Perplexes me as to why they removed the choices when in auto. I understand most may not care or even know what to put in the ini file, but N360 has now taken that choice away. There must be some key that can make VPN in N360 display all the choices even if Auto is used. A key such as displaying the choices regardless of which protocol one uses.

Perhaps they made the choice of protocol a feature of Norton VPN. The OpenVPN split occurred with this version.
I also think there’s a key somewhere that enables/disables the VPN protocol switcher.
What if only enter the empty PreferredProtocol= key in Vpn.ini?
