Chrome's WidevineCDMadapter.dll downloads to my c: drive

Hi all. I run Windows 7, 64 bit, with Chrome as my browser. I'll add that I am heavily dependent right now on Google - browser, mail, Blogger, Picasa, etc., so don't particularly want to disable my complete Google profile. However, recently everytime I open the Chrome browser I get a Norton notification that widevine.dll is safe. When I click on the details this is what I see:

File Insight message

When I click on the "locate" link, I am taken out to my c drive where three app files have been downloaded to my computer without my express consent. I promptly delete them, and then I repeat the whole routine the next time I open Chrome. This is supposedly a Chrome plug-in app for video playback, although there is also speculation that it is a method to allow Chrome to show pop-up ads that don't open in Flashplayer or other normal routes. I have also gone out into Chrome settings and disabled WidevineCDMadapter.dll, but that has done nothing to stop the downloads.

My question is simply this: is there a way for me to block just this particular download? I'm not particularly worried that it is malicious in any way, but I really, really hate the idea of Chrome just making changes to my computer without first asking my permission, and then allowing me to opt out.

Hi CarmenPiranha
When I used to use Chrome I used to get exactly the same thing coming up in the bottom right as a notification you will probably get ones like PepperFlash which are updates for the inbuilt flash player. I don’t believe that these files are anything that are harmful and I understand your concern about you not letting google changing your computer. With that said after I got those notifications I made a choice and uninstalled chrome and permanetly stayed with FireFox. If you continue to use chrome I would not treat these files as worrisome or anything to be concerned about. Here’s a link for a little more information on this file https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/chrome/aiEq-XFfons

Hope this helps!
Take care

Thanks for the reply AudiA1.

Also, thanks for the link. I had started this quest in the Chrome forums a week or so ago hoping that someone there would see that I and other users weren't happy with downloads being made to our computers without our permission. Basically I was told that when I agreed to Google's terms, that was part of the deal. So, like you, I may soon be weaning myself off Chrome.

Hi CarmenPiranha
You’re welcome I’m glad your problem is sorted out. It just shows that Google is becoming more and more intrusive on people’s computers like you said things being downloaded onto users computers is probably deep in the terms and conditions without most users even realising!

Enjoy FireFox if you choose to switch too it!
