I was looking for information on when to use the Norton Removal Tool.
A search on this forum for "Norton Removal Tool" found a post by Tony Weiss, Norton Forums Manager ("Re: Norton Removal Tool" 09-15-2008): "You should only use the Norton Removal Tool if you have a failed install of a product, or have trouble removing it with the uninstall ...you should only use it as a last resort for removing the software."
What are the reasons it is to be used only as a last resort? Does it leave it's own registry entries? Can having used it cause problems later?
The reason I ask is because I removed NAV4 (came pre-installed but never used or activated) with XP's Add or Remove Programs Tool (in preparation for installing NIS10 or Norton 360) and it appeared to uninstall immediately with no problems. When I rebooted, there were no Norton error messages.
I have been advised to use NRT to get a clean install of NIS10 or Norton 360, in case some NAV4 files or registry entries remain. But now I am circumspect about using NRT given Tony's advice.
In case its relevant, there are no other Norton products on this pc.
