Does anyone know why Ghost 15 would suddenly stop automatically deleting old recovery points? "Automatically Optimize Storage" is designed to delete recovery points so that there is always room on the backup drive for a new recovery point set. It has been working fine, but in the last couple of months this feature doesn't work. When Ghost attempts to run a scheduled backup, it fails because there is not enough room on the backup drive. Once I manually delete the oldest recovery points set, and restart the backup, the backup runs successfully.
Minor question: How do I include a screen capture? I tried: pasting from the clipboard, and the Insert Picture or Insert Word document buttons. The buttons did not bring up a browse window.

Hi,
I guess my first question would be have you changed anything about the configuration that might have changed how Ghost acts/reacts? If you create a new backup job will it work as you expect or does it have the same problem?

Dick,
I have not created a new backup job. I'll do that and report back on May 21.
When I select the Insert Picture button, nothing happens. I don't get a browse window.

What browser are you using?
When I click on it little green tree I get this

and I go from there
My backup worked, but then I realized that I had already deleted the recovery points. So, I'll continue test and get back to you next weekend. I'm using IE 8 and the Insert Image button still doesn't work. IE is working really slow, so there maybe other factors. I'm getting suspicious about a recent upgrade to my Citrix client.

Tom,
Sounds like a plan. While you are doing things you might want to download, install, update and run a copy of Malwarebytes scanner. It's free and here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
It is also Norton compatible so keep it on the desktop and use it as a second opinion whenever you aren't positive everything is 100%. I get that feeling every other week or so
We'll be here when you need us.
Dick,
I deleted my backup job, then recreated it with a different name. I also re-entered the options under Manage Backup Destination. The two changes did not solve the problem; the backup job won't run apparently because the the old recovery point set is not being deleted. Any ideas other than deleting Ghost and re-installing?
Thanks for the link to Malwarebytes. I had never heard of it, but I'll try the free version. While reading up on Malwarebytes I discovered Norton Power Eraser and other free Norton tools at http://us.norton.com/free-tools-trial/promo .

Tom,
You should be able to see those files with windows explorer and delete them from there.
Be careful with NPE it is a powerful tool and agressive. It has been known to disable good files. If you do use it DO NOT delete any files until after someone who knows the score checks them. You can reverse NPE's choices as long as they are still in the log.
I took your advice and just dropped the idea of using NPE. So, back to my problem with Ghost. Anything else to try before deleting and reinstalling?
Thanks,
Tom
Tom,
What device(s) are you saving the recovery points to? If you are saving them to a NAS, network share or any other location over IP, the optimize feature will not function correctly.
I'm backing up to another drive in the computer. I've used Ghost for many years with the same backup scheme. Unfortunately I can't attribute it to a particular change in my computer configuration.
Tom
Part of the problem may be that some of the recovery points were manually deleted rather than doing it through Ghost. This likely threw Ghost off. Going forward, delete recovery points through Ghost itself. To reset this, you'll likely need to create a new backup job, get a successful backup, and delete the old job. Use Ghost to delete the recovery points from the old job, even if they do not exist anymore, by going to Options>Manage Backup Destination.
One thing to consider is rather than using the Optimize feature, simple set Ghost to retain a certain amount of recovery point sets. For example, if it's set to retain 2, you will always have 2 complete backups. If room is running out, you will be warned so you don't miss a backup.
