Clicking on the NIS tray icon does not start the program, neither does start menu icon

Ok, so I upgraded to the newest Norton NIS just after the first of the year, having been a Norton user for as long as I can remember and since my old subscription expired.

The new one had some issues.  Finally worked through those, had to reinstall, etc, what a pain in my tuckus.  Thought everything was fine, and was wrong about that.

Yesterday Norton Utilities started acting up.  Said I had to reinstall, said process was automatic, which of course it was not and now I have to go find the NU disc and reinstall that too because the fix left me without it completely and it does not appear in my Norton subscriptions when I log in to Norton for replacement download.

Then I clicked on the NIS tray icon, nothing happened, the I right clicked on the icon and brought up the menu and selected "Open Norton Internet Security" and nothing happened.  Then I used the icon in the start menu, nothing happened.

Several minutes later a window pops up from Norton Autofix telling me that it has found a problem and cannot fix the problem and I have to reinstall which it claims is an automatic process, which it wasn't.  The I went to the Norton site and downloaded the removal tool and it removed my NIS.  Then I downloaded and installed the latest version from Norton which seemed to be working fine, updated itself, etc, window popped up when I asked for it, no prblem.

Now the window will not come up, same as before, and now Norton Autofix says I have errors 8504 and 107.  Says:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.1.22
Error: 8504, 107
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium
6002.18686.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.120824-0336
Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

Says it cannot find and automated fix for the problem and to visit the Norton Web Site.  So I click on the website button and the web site tells me I need to reinstall the program.

Come on guys...  I mean really.

Can you just make a product that is reliable and easy to use like I used to get from you?  Last years' program worked fine all year except for the hijacking incident which Norton didn't stop.  But Malwarebytes AntiMalware did the trick on that one.

Do I really need to spend hours nurturing your product in an attempt to coax it to work like it should already?

People pay good money for this software and rely on you guys for protection.  Why is your product so buggy and balky?

I have used Norton for years, no problems like this before.  What gives?

Update, Norton reinstalled itself.  Clicking on the icons as above still does not bring up the program, and guess what:

That's right boys and girls, Norton Autofix has now popped up 5 minutes later and tells me I have the same errors again.  Anybody surprised by that?

This time it says it has fuxed the problem, well it said that this morning too, then turned around and told me to reinstall.  This is what it says right now:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.1.22
Error: 8504, 107
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium
6002.18686.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.120824-0336
Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success

So now I have clicked on the icons again to see if I can bring up the program, I'm waiting...

waiting...    waiting...    no window so far...  waiting...

Oh, and by the way, after I enabled the Norton Add-ons for Internet Explorer, guess what?  It will not start either, so now the NIS and IE are both buggy, thanks Norton!  So now I have to use Safari to get here and make this post.

still waiting...   no window... I continue to wait...  been almost 5 minutes so Norton Autofix oughtta pop up right here any second...

and there it is!  Norton Autofix complaining about the same two errors it just said it fixed.  Here is what ist says now:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.1.22
Error: 8504, 107
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium
6002.18686.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.120824-0336
Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

So I click on "Open Support Web Site" and guess what, since Norton has now broken Internet Explorer with it's add-ons, I cannot get to the Support Site through Norton Autofix now because IE no longer works.

Hey you Norton Guys:  How bout fixing this software BEFORE it gets on my computer?  Is that too much to ask?

Why do I have to be your Guinea Pig?

Worked fine for years, and now it doesn't, whats the drill guys?

Sorry to hear of your issues.

Do you now or have you ever had another security program on your computer? If so, you will have to remove it with the removal tool for that program.

Can you do a full system scan in Safe Mode with NIS?

I would also suggest a second opinion scan using the FREE version of Malwarebytes. You can find it here http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

So here is today's update.

I uninstalled MalwareByte's Anti Malware as above, but not before updating the prgram and running a full scan, my system was declared clean.

Clicking the Norton shortcut and using the tray icon did not bring up the program, as expected.  Followed the suggestion and used the Norton NRnR program to remove Norton again and reinstall.  Did that, took a while, but happened finally.  Used the LiveUpdate feature several times, using the tray icon and the dektop icon and the start menu icon brought up Norton NIS, no problem.

Then I restarted the computer twice, and guiess what?  Viola!  I could no longer bring up the program and Norton AutoFix is giving me the same error codes again:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.1.22
Error: 8504, 107
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium
6002.18686.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.120824-0336
Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success

So for the moment it thinks it has fixed itself.  Now I try to bring up the program again and...

waiting...   waiting...

After 9 minutes the Norton Autofix pops up and determines:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.1.22
Error: 8504, 107
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium
6002.18686.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.120824-0336
Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

Web site suggests another reinstall.

Let me stress several things:

  1. I have reinstalled now 5 times, upgrading from a previous version
  2. I feel caught in a loop
  3. I feel Norton does not care
  4. I have used their products since they came out in the 90's

I would really like someone from Norton to take a real interest in this problem and help me find a solution.

Thanks.

I would suggest a couple of more reboots. It can sometimes take more than one restart to get everything updated and installed.

Another thing to check is your video drivers. These can cause issues that do not seem to be video related. Check your graphics card manufacturer's site for an update to your drivers.

You have reinstalled a number of times, and have used the NRNR tool. That may not be uninstalling as thoroughly as necessary. Using the Norton Removal Tool does a more thorough ininstall to get a better installation. This will uninstall tour Norton Utilities again, so if you do try this, try getting NIS up and running before reinstalling NU to see if there is some issue with the new version of NIS and NU.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here   www.norton.com/nrt
If you use Identity Safe, backup/export your data. Use the CSV format for compatibility.
Uninstall your Norton product with Windows control panel.
Reboot.
Run the Norton Removal Tool.
Reboot.
Log into your Norton Account from here   www.account.norton.com
Click on the Download button beside your current product subscription. This will download and install a preactivated copy of your product.
Run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.
Try to log into your Identity Safe. If you can, you are done. If not, Import your Identity Safe data.

Well, your solution worked for a while anyway, until about 4 PM today.

Now I am getting the same error again and cannot bring up the program when I click on the icons:

Norton Internet Security
20.2.1.22
Error: 8504, 107
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium
6002.18765.x86fre.vistasp2_gdr.130104-1437
Norton Autofix Results: 0 item(s)

Anymore ideas?

Have you checked in Control Panel - Programs to see if there are any signs of another security program? Even a trial that came with your computer when new could be causing issues if not fully removed.

Norton 2013 will not scan on my laptop.

No problem on PC.

Reinstall 5 times.

Ran NPE. it scaned and no problems

Ran CMD. it ran and no problems.

Just reinstalled again and it same old thing.
