Cold Booting

Booting a system

Booting a computer system is a process which involves loading an operating systems (OS) frombootable device. This happens after POST operation via BIOS.On general purpose computers, the boot process begins with the execution of an initial program boot loader stored in boot ROMs or read in another fashion.
There are two types of booting.

  • Cold booting
  • Warm booting
A cold boot is a booting process in which the computer starts from a powerless state.
For an active system, it requires one to shutdown normally -> power off the system or remove extername and internal power supply -> Wait for some time (a few seconds to 1 or 2 minutes) -> power on it -> start the system.

A warm boot is initiated by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete key combination or pressing reboot button.

The cold boot allows the system to clear all contents of memory/ RAM.
Warmbooting decreases load on electronic components, but will not clear all the contents from the memory (eventhough a user cannot find much difference)
