Cold calling and remote access questions

My desktop uses a Windows Vista operating system.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I see that key on the keyboard but I always refered to it as a start button.

There are a lot of useful shortcuts with the WINKEY

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-vista

WINKEY + E opens up the Windows Explorer file manager .... for example.

Also, if you just wish to shut down the browser, because some malicious programs can do he same thing Hugh mentions even if you click on the red close button, then just right click your task bar, and open Task Manager.

Right click on the browser entry, say Firefox.exe, and select End Process.

This will safely close the browser.

Ok I will definitely take a look at the WINKEY shortcuts to see what is there. Also that does sound like a much better idea to safely shut down the browsers in case of pop ups.

Good info from Hugh and F4E .

I always close my apps, active programs, Outlook, etc, before invoking a "sleep" or "shutdown" mode.  I think that's a holdover from earlier PC days, probably doesn't make a difference but it seems to speed up the process when invoking "sleep" mode if my activities are all closed first.

I like using the <win> shortcuts.  They're a time-saver for me as well as a "geek" thing for some that don't often use the mouse.

Among my favorites:

<win> d      "Desktop Active".  This minimizes all windows and puts the active cursor at the Desktop.

<win> b      This selects the first icon in the System Tray notification area.  I like that one since it's a fast way to put the cursor at the ^ symbol in the Sys Tray to check the hidden icons list.

<win> l     Locks the Desktop in case one needs to leave the PC for a short time and doesn't want to invoke a "sleep" or "Shutdown" mode.

<win> pause/break    Displays a quick summary of your PC's stats (processor type, memory capacity)

<win> r  Opens the "run" dialog window

The <win> key is also great for hotkey shortcuts if you're using a script tool.  I use "Autohotkey" with the <win> key:

<win> t    Opens the WIndows Task Scheduler

<win> n   Opens a Notepad window

<win> w  Runs a local weather page with my browser

<win> a  My Amazon home page

<win> o  Launches my Outlook e-mail

Sounds great! Thanks for all of your input! I guess this will make things somewhat quicker while using the desktop.

There is one more thing that I would like to address. I am finding that my Norton 360 is running somewhat slow and at times become unresponsive along with Google Chrome. I usually flush my browsers when I am finished so I have no idea on what could possibly cause that to happen. Would you have any suggestions on how to handle that? I am currently running Quick Scans and Full Scans.

Thanks!

Thanks again everybody for your help!

Hi, ACS4500. Check out Tony Weiss' announcement for the new update.

That may fix some of your problems, as it's a full install version.

Though the announcement doesn't mention N 360, it is included.  See here:

Sorry, just realized that Tony made a separate announcement for N 360.  So here's the link to the N 360 update announcement.

Ok,

I am definitely going to look into the update but I didn't mark this thread as solved. Is that automatic?

No ACS4500, the marking of a post as the solution is not automatic - you as the thread starter have the option to mark any post within the thread as the solution.  You should be able to alter the solution by clicking on Options in the upper right corenr of thepost marked as the Solution and selecting the Not the Solution.  This should  unmark the post as the solution.  If you have any difficulties doing that and desire the thread ot be "unsolved" let us know.

I would not mind the thread being marked as solved but the thing is that I did not do it! So I am somewhat concerned with that. Is there a login history available for users?

The Accept as Solution is located very clse to the Reply button - I know Ihave hit it instead of the Reply button in the past and I notice you posted right after the post marked as the Solution - so that is a possibility.

There is no log-in history availabe to us users that would show who marked the post as Solved that I am aware of.
