I want to turn off Community Watch because it makes my hard drive run for 35-40 min. continuously. I turned it off but still see that it is active according to my "recent history". I am mistaking this drive activity for a full system scan. After the drive finally stops running, the most recent entries in the history are those of Community Watch. I re-checked the settings and the red "off" is still indicated for Community Watch. Is it normal for community watch to cause this much hard drive activity? How can I permanently turn it off?

Hi Stevemomm,
I always hate to have to ask if you are clicking on Apply after changing the setting. Sorry, but It is a necessary evil in eliiminating a cause.
If you think it may be a full system scan, you can check the Scan Results page on the drop down menu for History.
There is also a Page for the Community Watch on the drop downmenu in History - it will give you a time it completes - but not how long it runs if you highlight it and select More Details.
I don't think it is the Community Watch that is causing 30 plus minutes of disk activity. It is probably the actual a/v scan taking that time. At the end of the scan, if there was any issues found, Community Watch gathers the info and sends it to Symantec for examination. That would explain why you see Community Watch appearing at the time you see this activity listed.
Yes, I have hit the "Apply" button and am also certain that it is not a full system scan or even a quick scan. My full system scans are scheduled and take about 19 min. according to the history. I was aware of the community watch drop down box and it shoes that it is active even though I have turned it off. I am stumped.

Thanks for the reply but it is not a full system scan.....I know how to check for that and have it scheduled. There is no evidence of a scan in the history after one of these long drive runs. This happens every day and I have a full system scan scheduled only every 7 days.

Scans can run in the background and one example is after a background run of LiveUpdate. If there is a new virus definition downloaded and installed, there will be a quick scan run. This is over and above any scheduled scans you have. This is by design to check your system for the new malware definitions just uploaded.
In Norton History, are there still Norton Community Watch submissions pending? I believe that after disabling NCW it will continue to send submissions that have been queued up previously. It would not continue to actively search for new files of interest, however.
Have you looked in Norton Tasks in the Performance pane to verify what background task may be running other than NCW?
