There is currently a compatibility issue between Firefox 4.0.1 and some features of Norton Safety Minder 2.1.0.52 (for Norton Online Family), where NSM is listed as “not compatible” by the Firefox browser. Our team is working on the issue, and the issue will be corrected in the next update. It will be distributed via Automatic LiveUpdate. The workaround at this time is to remain at Firefox 4.0 until the compatibility update is released.

Its been a couple months now since Firefox 4 was released, this has been an issue for my family as well. Are there any work arounds to enable the plugin at this time?
you can always use norton dns,it has parental controls as well as malware blocking.at least until safety minder is compatible.

Thanks for the inquiry. The program (Norton Safety Minder 2.1.0.52) is currently compatible with Firefox 4. We are working on the compatibility issue with Firefox 4.0.1. The current workaround is to use Firefox 4 or Internet Explorer as your browser.

Is there really that much of a difference between 4.0 and 4.0.1?
heres the changelog link,click the whats new in ff 4.0.1.with it saying fixed several security issues i dont think its good staying with 4.0.
Any fix in sight? This seems to be taking a long time.
FF 4.0.1 has been out for over a month now. The suggestion to use FF4.0 when FF 4.0.1 fixed some security issues seems odd advice from a security company. Just sayin'.
problem here until Norton fix it we will have FF 4.02 and the carousel goes around. after few months we many problems with NOF and NSM i must say we were better in the old day when the parental control was a fully software add-on. UV
right on,i wish nof wasnt browser oriented.as you said as soon as ff and then we got chrome come with new versions we'll be right back to were we are now.dont mean to compare anyones product but when i tried kaspersky internet security i loved the parental controls.it didnt matter what browser you would use,i wish norton would incorporate the parental controls like that so we dont have to wait for fixes.saying that i like and use nis,great protection just some feedback.
So what is the effect of the compatibility issue?
I just set this up-- it took several hours for reasons not worth trying to explain.
The main purpose was to retire the internet after 11pm.
My kid got the 15 minute warning, then apparently hi continued blithely along (it is now 11:40p). The log says "signed in during curfew hours" etc., twice in a couple of minutes.

In addition, it appears as though some changes were made to the settings as well, and that's even more of a mystery-- it looks like something closer to the default settings are now on. Above all, smart as my kid is, I can't figure out how he solved the problem so quickly.
gatekeeper1's hack seems to make the online family software almost useless. Has there been a solution for that? If that's not my problem, then would the firefox 4.01 incompatibility be relevant to this probelm?

The answer to my question is that when firefox detects an incompatible extension, it disables it. I have now installed 4.0.0 and hope to be able to report that it is working (it is not disabled, at any rate.)
In my opinion Saftey Minder is really only good for the younger children. If your tech savvy you might experiment with permissions or lock in the value in the registry and make sure only your account has access to change it. Its too easy for kids to bypass the system security if they are goods with PC's; even if you have control if the drive isnt encrypted, they can load up a boot cd or USB drive and crack or simply replace your admin account password. You could set a bios password, not allow booting of CD, and lock your case so they cant jumper the motherboard or reset the bios to default but that may not be worth it. Some boards can have the password cleared by shorting the correct pins. The bottom line security is generally not that great in Windows as everyone and their brother posts hacks and utilities for it. Their are some great programs out their but the best ones generally cost a bit. If you do want to encrypt and tighten the contols TrueCrypt is open source and is a great way. Just be careful as your data does need to be backed up and you need to keep your passwords, etc safe.
Still I think some trust with checks and balances is needed with kids to teach them responsibility. Its not an easy balance today though with the how accessible information is. I do think its important though to setup the basic blocks to try and protect them from accidently bumping into some of the negative side of the web. BTW - Kidzui is a whitelist browser for the really young kids and mine enjoy it. Im not to the point yet where they are trying to outsmart their dad. When exactly were ya gonna get around to an update do I have to wait 6months like the toolbar issue? The time frame seems to be unacceptable . I attempt to stay up to date for security issues but your holding all of us up and making the online experience less secure. I can't update any browser due to Nortons **bleep** dragging. The issue still affects IE9 as well. Some kind of timeframe would be appreciated not just another circular answer. Thankyou I am also sending a letter of complaint to Symantec corporate. I have been a customer from the first version of Norton antivirus to 3605.0 premier and I have never seen this kind of delay in customer care!
And now I hear that Firefox 5 will be released tomorrow (June 21). In the fast moving development of browsers, will the Norton Safety Minder be able to keep up? Or do I need to start looking at other solutions?
and now there was update for NIS 2011 so it will work the Norton tool bar with FF 5.0 and i can’t update! why? cause i use NSM and it is still not compatible even with FF 4.01.what is going on here? are there 2 camps in Norton not working with each other? what can i say, wish back to the old days of parental controls. must look for other solution UV

I have searched around and not been able to find an answer. I have upgraded to firefox 5 and after I do so, when my daughter logs on the pc, I get an email telling me safety minder has been disabled.
It appears as though all the websites are still being blocked.
So my question is, can someone tell me if thretherel be an update for this soon, and also, can someone confirm that even without this plugin, my daughter's internet settings are active
