Hi McStick,
First, what was the last webpage you visited and did you shut off the "music window" with ctrl+alt+delete?
Second, what type of Norton Product are you running?
Let us know.
Thanks.

I didn't actually shut the music window because it didn't appear in the task list. I had a number of websites open in different tabs including BBC news, hotmail etc all of which safe web says are ok. I'm running NIS 2009, as of yesterday. If this is a virus, I had exactly the same problem last year where my computer got riddled with them just after I upgraded to NIS 2008!
McStick,
1) Do you have the pop-up blocker enabled in your browser? How did you get the music to stop?
2) Run an NIS 2009 scan in SAFE MODE.
Can it be it was just some banner?
Sometimes these make lot's of noise

Hi, the only way I could get it to stop was to restart my computer! It hasn't started since and I'm running everything now that I was when it started before! I'm currently scanning with spyware doctor but it hasn't found anything besides tracking cookies, and the earlier NIS scan didn't find anything either. I'm trying a full scan including trusted files as well at the minute so I'll report back on that as well. And then I'll try the scan in safe mode! What difference does it make to the scan when running in safe mode anyway? (I assume it's more likely to pick up stuff?)
When running in Safe Mode, your computer loads only the bare minimum number of processes to run. If you have some type of malware it is easier to identify and remove if it is not active.
So I just ran a full scan in normal mode with advanced hueristics and trust control off. And it didn’t find a single thing apart from the usual tracking cookie! Should I still scan in safe mode?
McStick,
It certainly would not hurt to run a scan in Safe Mode. It only takes a little time and can provide some peace of mind if you have any concerns.
Let us know how the Safe Mode scan turns out and if you have any repeats of your initial issue.
Best Wishes.
