Confused about Mac OS X Snow Leopard behaviour

Hi there,

I have installed this on my kids laptops (new Mac OS X Snow Leopard machines) - and it installs fine, sets up fine, seems to understand the configuration fine - but the problem comes when  they are force logged out. The screen goes blank and the whole computer becomes unresponsive. You can't log out, you can't shut down, you can only force restart and force power off. Both of which are not acceptable solutions as they potentially damage the OS configuration. We had no problems with this on Windows - and it looks like (apart from this) it will work on Mac OS X. But this is a show stopper - I just purchased the whole Internet suite from Symantec for them as well, and it seems to insert itself nicely into those menus.

What can I do?

HIya KatieQ,

The box says "Internet Security Mac Edition" - Identity Protection, Antivirus, Spyware Pro Phishing Pro, Firewall, Intrusion Prevention.

The timeout countdown occurs for 60 seconds. I log in as them, the box appears saying they are being monitored, then (past the curfew) the countdown begins. I can let the timer count down to zero, click ok and then after a short time (maybe a minute maybe a bit longer), the whole screen blanks showing only the background image (no menu, no dashboard, no icons no nothing) and it becomes unresponsive. I tried originally having the account Managed, then Standard and finally Admin - all of them behave in the same fashion. I tried looking for those two log files (oxygen and nsm?) and couldn't find them for any hints either...

Was that enough info? I'm happy to install anything on the machine that would act as a diagnostic. Or other suggestion!

Thanks!

Richard

rvowles,

Can you please uninstall/reinstall Norton Safety Minder on the Mac to see if it helps?

Thanks,

Katie

Hi there,

So I re-read the associated text file - it says it only works with Leopard, not Snow Leopard. I would suspect this is my problem? Is there a version slated for release for Snow Leopard?

(I am trying to uninstall now)

I just uninstalled and reinstalled and the same problem exists. This time the dashboard appears for a little while (by itself, the menu has gone) but once you select an app the dashboard goes as well.

Hi rvowles,

Thanks for the update.  I have reported the issue to the Mac team.  They are working on the issue and it should get corrected in the next release.  In the meanwhile, please disable the force logout behavior of NSM for now.

Thanks,

Katie

I too have been having the same problem since installing this on snow leopard. Glad to hear it will be fixed (hopefully soon).

Does anyone know if this has been fixed? Using the time management features of Snow Leopard is an enormous pain, this product was awesome on Windows :-(

Hi rowles,

We have just released a new update for both Mac and Windows version.  Please go to the website and download the latest Norton Safety Minder.

Please let us know if it helps.

Thanks,

Katie
