Hi All,
I recently switched over from using Microsoft Live OneCare to Norton Internet Security 2009 on my laptop and am confused as to the status regarding the security level of my new firewall.
In Windows OneCare, whenever I connected to a NEW network, such as when traveling, a pop-up window would appear and state a new network has been found and then would prompt me to select either "Home/Work" or "Public" for my security level. This would then be saved for furture connections to this network.
When selecting "Home/Work", file sharing would be enabled and other security decreased. When "Public" was selected, OneCare literally locked down my laptop to all but for web use. The Vista Firewall works very similar. You could always change your selection later or purge the stored information so all connections would reprompt you again.
Norton Internet Security does not prompt me for any decisions when I connect to a new network. How do I know what state my security is in, and if my file sharing has been locked off when I am connected to a public network? Can I change this if needed?
Also, if I read the manual correctly, it appears that NIS locks down your PC if you are connected to a non secured wireless network but what about when you connect to a wired network at a hotel or other business? Also, what about when you take your PC to a friends house and connect it to their secured wireless network but don't want your fire sharing open? Again, I see no options? Thus, there are times when you want to have your PC locked down even if you are connected to a temporary "secured" network since some small businesses use regular comsumer Routers for signal distribution that would show up as being a secured wireless network.
So how do I check this, select this, or change this?
Thank you in advance for any replies.
