Hi, I have  NAV 2005. Once a week it scans my computer.  It shows no viruses.  I did a trend mirco house call scan.  In the middle of the scan a NAV Virus alert window came up. Notiffying me of a HIGH RISK Trojan horse virus c:\docume~1\PA....V86CR3a03572  It said "Unable to repair this file"  I clicked on the link in the box to get more info.  The link led me to the description of a #1 VERY LOW LEVEL trojan horse. ??   Not a high risk one, as the virus alert had said.

I ran NAV in safe mode.  NAV found no viruses.  I ran Trend micro the next day.  In the middle of the scan the same thing happened again.  a NAV box came up.  Virus alert high risk.  Once again, a trojan horse. with a different number.  c:\docume~1\PA....VC3CQUa01268

How can NAV show that I have no viruses when I run scans, even in safe mode?  and yet when i run the trend micro house call scan, NAV boxes come up showing I have HIGH RISK trojan horses  AND when i click on the NAV link in the box to read about the virus, it says LOW level?  in both cases it said that unable to repair this file.   btw, I have in years past run trend micro scans, and this never happened.  thanks, lili
Thanks Cytoned.  I am not sure where to find "the full path of the file"    I copied down, on paper,  the exact information that the NAV virus alert said.  Thats what  I posted here.  If you could tell me how to find the full path, I would be glad to post it here.  thanks again, Lili

I would suggest Upgrading to either N.AV 2008 or N.I.S. 2008 as soon as possible because these are much more advanced that N.AV 2005.  N.AV 2008/N.I.S. 2008 would have probably removed this detection and there is a very high chance that it would have is just one reason to Upgrade.

You might want to wait until Norton 2009 Products have been Released; they should be Released in September 2008.

<<  I have  NAV 2005.  >>

What version of Windows are you using -- unless NAV/NIS2008 does not support yours it would be a good idea to update. If you have a valid subscription to NAV2005 then the update can be free although I am not certain that this applies to a version so old. Someone here should know.

Even if you have to buy a new copy of 2008 it will pay off since you will definitely be entitled to a free upgrade to Norton NAV/NIS 2009 when it comes out in the near future (hopefully <s>).

If you have Windows X.P./Vista, then you can Upgrade.

That's why I asked what version of Windows he has since one explanation for using a 2005 version would be that he is using WIN98 or even ME or W2K if you take the system requirements literally.

I suspect it would run on W2K since it is NT5.0 and XP is NT5.1 ....

Thanks for the responses.  I renewed my subscription for NAV rather than buying a new one because when I installed the NAV 2005 it was installation hell.  No one could figure out what was wrong. Not even the symantec people. Not the Dell techs.  I spent a lot of money trying to install the 2005.  Finally. after days of no virus protection, and a lot of $$$ spent trying to resolve it, a kid came to my house and googled the problem.  It turned out that when 2005 was installing, there were temp files from NAV 20004 that did not get ininstalled.  So NAV would not let me do the installation.  Error messages kept coming up.   I did not want to reckon with NAV again trying to install an updated version in subseqnent years.
Thats why it is an old version. I just keep paying each year to renew the 2005.   Wishing you all best,  lili

That is one reason why Norton has a Norton Removal Tool -- NRT for short -- that you can download. Since Norton are updating their products all the time, the Norton Removal Tool is constantly updated.

This link: Symantec Norton Removal Tool. will direct you to the current Symantec Norton Removal Tool.

So if you run into a problem that is not solved that would be the way to go but do note that if you have any other Norton products installed, even things like GHOST or Save & Restore that you might not associate with them, they will be removed as well.

Going back to your first message and what you describe I would lay odds that the discrepency between your NAV2005 scan and the Trend house call scan (I assume that is an on-line scan which is something that Norton have as well I believe) is due to the changes in technology. You may be getting definitions downloaded that are uptodate but if the basic NAV engine does not have the capability of detecting that kind of Trojan then it may well not detect it, or report incorrectly if I understand you correctly.

So I guess it may up to you to decide -- is the risk of being invaded when using 3 year old technology better or worse than the installation problem for which there should be a solution, especially since your young geek identified the cause. How did he get NAV2005 to install? Clean the temp folders manually?

From your Post, I assume you have either X.P. or Vista installed.

In that case, I would highly-recommend that you do Upgrade because Norton 2005 Products do not Protect your computer enough and it will not be able to Detect and Block fake Web Sites.

If you are worried about having no Virus Protection, why not Buy the C.D. - thus, you can un-install then install without being Connected to the Internet - and, if something goes wrong, you can use the Norton Removal Tool if there are installing  problems, or you could even Post a Post here about the Error(s), if any, that occur.

Norton 2009 Products, like already mentioned, will be Released in/around September 2008, so you might want to wait until Norton 2009 Products are Released before Upgrading since you have had problems with installing, to which there should be a Solution.

Interesting.

Can you post the full path to the file, and maybe some of the file properties. I’m thinking this may be a file that Housecall temporarily creates on your machine and for some reason Norton is flagging it as a risk, but in actual fact, it could be a false positive.
